Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

1dsmk3
Review Date: Aug 26, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $7,800.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: 21MP, Fast AF, build quality is extremely high, 5fps with 21MP, battery life is incredible, live view, 45 AF points
Cons:
230,000 dot LCD, SD card slot instead of 2 CF slots

The 1Ds3 is my first 1-series camera from Canon. Previously a 40D and before that a 350D.

1Ds3 is a lot of camera. Compared to both my previous cameras, the AF is faster, more accurate. I did the focus test chart v2.1 with all my lenses, 17-40/4L, 24-70/2.8L and 70-200/2.8L IS and all were spot on. I couldn't believe it. With all the haters and bull-crap being posted into the forums are focus issues, I was a little worried about buying a $8k camera and it not focusing to highest of standards. Well I am more than happy and just smile when I think about picking up the 1Ds3 and shooting.

The metering is also better, IMHO. Shooting the same scene with my 1Ds3 and 40D, I find 1Ds3 exposures are consistently better. Overall I am extremely happy with both my 1Ds3 and 40D from Canon.

The only wish I would have, and its something I believe would never really be an option ... would be for Canon to offer an upgrade to the LCD to 920,000 dot TFT display in the new 50D. I been out shooting with a friend who shoots a D3 (which was ironically have focus issues with 70-200/2.8VR), but the LCD on the back was amazing. I really can't afford to buy the 1Ds4 or 1Ds3n just for the LCD ...

Canon EOS 40D

Pros: LCD, fast 6.5fps, comfortable grip, IQ, good battery life, 3 custom dials, customizable "My Menu", Live View, viewfinder
Cons:
weather seals are basically worthless, direct print button (canon either get rid of it or allow it to be mapped to another function)

Incredible upgrade from a 350D. For one, its 10000x more comfortable to hold, the rebel xt was so small.

LCD is nice. It may be second to Sony/Nikon's new LCD, but coming from a 1.8" LCD, its like heaven. customizable menu, and 3 selections on the top dial are awesome and so convenient.

Everything else you can get from dpreview.com and its forums. Nice camera, super happy with my purchase.

Well worth the upgrade from any of the rebel series, 300D, 350D or 400D!

Equipment I own, 40D, EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 430EX speedlite flash

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Review Date: Oct 18, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,129.99 | Rating: 8

Pros: sharp, "L" quality build, IS
Cons:
lens extends really far @ 105mm

First L lens. Now, I will never buy anything less then L quality. 3x more expensive, but you can see why from the moment you take it out of the box to the moment you are getting sharp terrific pictures.

Purchased it as an all-around--walk-about lens. Very pleased. Smile

Comes with hood and soft case. Purchased canon UV-1 filter and circular polarizer filter to go with lens.
