Push-pull deisng needs to go

Nice optics and usefull focal range. The images are quite sharp for a zoom but not as sharp as a prime in this range.
My only real complaint has to do with the design: Canon needs to dump the push-pull zoom. It acts as a vacuum cleaner sucking up any and all dust into the lens housing. Perhaps it was an engineering limitation that precluded Canon from making this a standard ring zoom setup but it sure is a bad idea as far as ergonomics go.

Chromatic aberation
|
|
|
Not as sharp as the 24-70 2.8L but the results are more than acceptable for a zoom in this focal range. The main problem I have seen after using this lens for a week is the strange chromatic aberation that seems to be present in fine details. If you dont micro analyze your images it is not much of an issue. If you are a stickler for details this might bother some. Other than that a quality lens and affordable as well.

Soft images

Not nearly as sharp as the 100-400IS which I purchased months after selling this lens. The main problem is the soft images at 300-500mm. Useable images at 100-300mm but the quality and sharpness falls off dramatically for higher focal lenghts. 50mm is not useable as the distortion is too pronounced. Not constructed as ruggedly as the 100-400IS and dust is a serious problem. Save your money.

An absolutely superb piece of glass. Very little barrel distortion and useable wide open. Little or no chromatic aberation. Nothing but the best.
