Nikon 18mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor

Review Date: Jul 24, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 9

Pros: Size, AF Speed, max ap. of 2.8, performance.
Cons:
Cost (retail price), can be difficult to find used, the hood (HB-18) is extremely difficult to find.

My first Nikkor 18mm was the (great) f3.5 AIS... i loved it, but wanted more speed... I eventually found one of these (2.8 AF-D) for sale from a buddy for $200, bought it and never looked back.
This is the only 18mm f2.8 AF prime out there (right?), and it fills that void nicely. The size is just right, the focus is super fast, i like that it's a 2.8, and the glass is just great. I liked it so much i got a second copy recently for $325....

Yes, i have two copies for a total of $525. If you look around, you can find them for cheap sometimes- but it is worth the wait.

Pros: Price(used), fast focus, sweet image quality, small/tight package
Cons:
not sealed? Not f1.4? i'm reaching here. I love this lens.

I finally got this lens, after thinking about it for a long time.

Really good deal IMO. Focus is lightning fast, as it is on most Ring-USM lenses. Image quality (on 5D) is to be expected for a wide-aperture wideangle- a bit of falloff wide open, and DoF is pretty narrow so it can be hard to nail the focus sometimes. No focus-recompose here!
I couldn't be happier w/ it personally, and i fully reccomend it as a cheap alternative to the 35L.

Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM

Review Date: Jul 28, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $750.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharpness is second to none, the AF is bitingly accurate, built like a tank, and easy to carry. Very well balanced on a 1-series.
Cons:
I guess the only stuff i can complain about is more of a wish- i'd LOVE this lens to be sealed.

If you're even considering this lens as a future purchase, just do it.
