Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit T*

Review Date: Feb 9, 2015 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $500.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Excellent distortion control, colors, and AF speed.
It makes all other wide angle lenses for mirrorless cameras look like garbage.

After having shot the Zeiss 2.8/21 on Canon FF for a couple years and loving it, I was skeptical of this lens. To my surprise, it rivals its full frame brother - blasphemy - in all categories except the build quality. To be fair, it is a very well built lens, and for the Sony/Fuji crop camera models is a nice weight and balance. I was also surprised at how rapid the autofocus was. Being used to manual focusing the 21, I expected to have to do the same on the Sony mount. Instead, the AF performance was great.

How is the distortion? I have used it for portraits, and the subject looks just fine. There are no other lenses in this focal length where I would try that.

I purchased this lens as a two-pack with the 32mm and essentially got them for half normal price. Even at full price, this lens is a great performer.

Zeiss colors and image rendition in a lightweight package. What is not to like???

Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Planar T*

Review Date: Apr 1, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 8

Pros: Build quality and handling are extraordinary. It is quite sharp even wide open at greater distances than 8 or so feet. Nice 3D look to images and color throughout range.
Sharpness and focus shift from minimum focus distance out to about 5-8 feet are sub par. I find the Contax version sharper and better at close distances.

Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM

Review Date: May 25, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $650.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: profound sharpness (even wide open), fast focusing, takes to extension tubes and 1.4x extender quite well; light weight
hood threading is lousy...too much effort to screw on correctly; no longer comes with the tripod collar at same price

Overall, this is a fantastic lens suited for many purposes. If you have ample space, it makes for flattering head/torso shots, it is a good FL for flower portraits or - when coupled with a 1.4x extender or extension tubes - is a capable close-up lens choice.
Tight accent landscapes are similarly harvested well with this gem.

It is FAR lighter and sharper than the f/2.8L 70-200 light that I routinely get sharp photos handheld at 1/60sec exposures.

Color rendering is well balanced, and the bokeh is gorgeous.

A couple years ago, this lens was packaged with its tripod collar. That made this excellent value even better.

Only gripe is that the hood is a relatively poor thread fit to the lens. This being the only thing that I can find to complain about tells something of the quality of the lens itself.
