This is a good average lens in my opinion. Personaly I do not think it deserves the L rating that canon has given it. If I put a 1.4 teleconverter on my 70-200 .. the 70-200 is sharper that the 100-400 zoomed to the same focal length, The 100-400 is softest at the 400 setting which is where most of us need it to be sharpest. After I did the test comparing it to the 70-200 with the 1.4 on it. I imediatly sold the 100-400 and my 70-200 non IS and went out and purchased a 70-200 IS and a 1.4 teleconverter. I will have to eventualy buy a 400, but I am much happier with the qulaity of this current combination. So there is my two cents worth .. hope it helps.
