Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom AF

Review Date: Jun 13, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $400.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Price, f2.8, compact, accurate AF
28mm distortion, small filter size. Hunting focus at low light, Tamron color

Good for its price and image quality. Compare to L24-70 better AF accuracy, better CA control. My copy is sharp at 2.8 all range cover. I am lucky thank Lord.

Color is warmer than Canon L. Glass quality is not as good as L but acceptable. AF at low light is hunting not as fast as L lens. But I have to say this lens beat the three L I tried for its overall quality at f2.8. No use if AF is fast but wrong. Extreme condition test is fine. Nearly can tell the difference compared to L.

Good copy is absolute a good choice. QC problem not only happened to Tamron but also Canon. My experiences with Canon told me never trust too much the brand name and the price. You will not pay 200% more for un-guaranteed 7-10% improvement. Especially this zoom range at f2.8 you just focus around 25-50% area of the whole image.

Try this lens and save money for prime lens if you need better image quality or other zoom lens.

Tamron 28-75MM F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF)

Review Date: Jun 10, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Accurate AF, good contrast, reasonalbe CA
Tamron color, 67mm filter

Compare to Canon 24-70 f2.8 (Canon)Tamron is a winner for his accurate AF, price and CA controlling. For color and contrast Canon is better. When wide open the peripheral area lack of sharpness but is is common even for Canon. So after trying Canon first I would accept this. I found better AF accuracy compared with Canon. The reason maybe it is designed later than Canon so more compatable with new canon bodies.

The weak point of this lens is its color. It could be explained by the price difference. Also it is not weather proof. I did not find MTF of Tamron lens, which makes me a little bit concern about its resolution.

For f2.8 this lens is a good choice. I would suggest try custom WB when you shoot with this lens.

Tamron 28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD VC AF

Review Date: Jun 10, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 8

Pros: Compact and light, good performance during daylight and acurate AF
Bad low light performance

Many bad comments about it but I have to say it is not so awful.

The design purpose for this lens is not for pro but traveller or houswife. So do not look at it in a picky way after you play with quite a few L lens. I do revaluate when I tried severl L band within that range(28-300) and surprisingly I realize I missed something really good about it. Its AF is acurate. With a tripod the macro is really good. No obvious distortion with resonable CA.

I saw some good review about it and now I believe they are right. When you travel it is a choice. And it is also a good back lens.

I did not find MTF for this lens neither the 28-75 f2.8. Obviously Tamron unwillingly to share these informations unlike Canon and Sigma. But for the purposes I listed I would recommend this lens if you have some extra money in your pocket.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Review Date: Jun 9, 2005 Recommend? no | Price paid: Not Indicated

Pros: Good color, contrast
CA issue, focus issue especially current batch from BH (BH is good)

I had vey bad experience with this lens. I called canon to confirm if it worked with XT. The answer is yes. But three copies I tried failed me.

1. Focus issue. I can barely catch the right point or plate (of focus) if I trust AF from my XT. Manul is fine. Mainly it is back focus.

2. CA issue. CA appears when contrast is high. It is consistent.

I belive some comments like picking a good one among 6 copies. But I just feel tired and disappointed to do so. Do not forget you should get what you pay. Not dealing with Canon about calibration.

I suggest guys spend some time to understand MTF. The MTF of this lens is really good. But the QC is horrible. Without focus the color means nothing. What you paied is not only for several good glasses but as well how to place them in the right place, which can fit all the camera bodies.

Be aware.
