Nikon 85mm AF-S NIKKOR f/1.8G

Review Date: Apr 4, 2016 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $400.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Sharp, light, great bang for the buck
AF needed warranty repair

This lens is ridiculously sharp, generally sharper than it needs to be since most of my pictures are viewed on screen rather than printed. Focus speed is fast enough to capture athletic dogs running straight towards the camera (D750, good light), with every whisker clear and sharp. In short, this lens provides remarkable image quality at an extremely reasonable price (purchased new with $100 instant rebate).

I did have one problem: the autofocus locked up not too long after I received the lens. Nikon quickly repaired the lens under warranty and I have had no subsequent problems.

Tamron 60mm f/2 Di II LD IF Macro 1:1 SP AF

Review Date: Jan 12, 2014 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $300.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Price, image quality, versatility, f/2
Slow AF (hunts in low light), imprecise manual focus ring

Bought this lens used on the FM marketplace and it quickly became one of my favorite and most-used lenses. Beautiful 1:1 macro images with a working distance around 4. Also serves an outstanding DX portrait lens (90mm equivalent on FX). Autofocus performance can be inconsistent wide open.
