Pros:

Sharpness, AF speed, amazing colors/contrast as most L's. Not as heavy to handhold.
Cons:
Hood is not up to this lens level, connecting is pain everytime.

I looked on this lens for more than year, debating size and price. As result prise rose about $300 . So I decided no more waiting!
Previously I own 300/F4 IS (didin’t impressed me much) and also now still have 400/5.6 primes. But this lens man.... It is stunning!!! It is easy for me to handheld however I got new Gitzo tripod and Arca-Swiss head for it as well. I am using lens on 1D mk III and this is unbeatable combination for sports or wild life. Excellent with extenders (1.4 or 2), weather sealed!!!

Pros:

Relatively light and not as big. Fastest AF among any other EOS I own/tried. Color/Contrast/Sharpness very good as well.
Cons:
Bit slow aperture, I would prefer F4 instead (no IS!!!). Useless with 1.4tc since dramatic loss in IQ.

Got this lens for mine 40D/birding and air shows needs. AF not working with 1.4tc on 40D, even with taped pins. Same works on 5D fine, I guess simply 40D issue with AF.
Amazing AF speed, very good for birds in flight. Bit sticky hood but this is minor to me. I like old desigh for tripod colar and overal lens not as heavy and long.
First shots amazed me much more than my 300/F4L IS with 1.4tc.

Pros:
Excellent zoom lens, fast and good build.
Cons:
Expensive, heavy, not as sharp with F2.8. After using L primes become useless since not up to the level.

I used this lens for 18 month and sold, not because something was wrong. Main reason - I prefer primes and quality I am getting from primes. Even superb zoom as this lens can't beat prime.
Still good lens in my opinion, extremely popular among professionals.

Pros:

Wide and fast for wide shots, quick AF, excelent weathersieled build. Good fro travel.
Cons:
Not up to wide primes level at all, even my 15mm fisheye is way better lens. Softer at 35mm end, was nto happy with corners sharpness.

I good this lens almost free with 5D double rebate in 2006, after 7 month replaced with primes. Averall good lens for travel, light and well build. Weather sealed!!!.
However since I was looking for better results and faster apertures, better colors and sharpness I got 15mm fisheye, 24L & 35L instead. Each of this primes are amazingly superb and superior to 17-40L, which is still good entry level L zoom.

Pros:

Been surprised with AF speed, previous reviews scared me lot about, it seems fine to me. Lens producing exceptional sharpness and colors/contrast. I like the way it performs MF even while AF mode.
Cons:
Heavy & thick, why Canon makes huge lenses like this? Why Leica & Zeiss could make much smaller for same apertures?
Don't like much that lens expends while focusing. Cost a lot, should cost less.

This is my 3-rd L prime complementing previously purchased 35L & 135L. All 3 are just superb lenses; however I am still like 135L the best. 85L as well as other L primes need full frame sensor and works superb on mine 5D. Same story with other two L primes.
Lens surprisingly good in AF, which has been kind of stopper was preventing me to get this lens before. But I think it is fine for mine needs.
85L most expensive lens among I have and need personal care, however I am not planning to use filter for protection since don’t like loosing picture quality because of this.
Highly recommending this lens!!!
