Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM

Review Date: May 30, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Amazing Bokeh, Very fast, silky smooth manual focus
slow to AF when going from close focus to infinity, but this is because the lens is built with precise MF in mind.

Yes, that is right, I paid nothing for this lens. It's a long, but beautiful story. :-) I don't use this lens as much as I would like, but it's a great piece of glass to own. It is simply unmatched when it comes to portrait work.

There is a bit of a learning curve with this lens though. You will need to pay very close attention to your DOF, and it's also a good idea to take multiple shots of your subject. Sometimes if you move forward or backwards a tad, it will throw off the focus. Take your time with this lens, and the results will be stunning.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM

Review Date: May 30, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,600.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Excellent Range for sports, portraits. Sharp wide open, and the IS is great.
It would be nice if Canon copied Nikon's QR tripod mount that was used on their 70-200mm 2.8 VR.

This is an excellent all around lens for sports and portrait photography. It's a real workhorse. This lens will work great with the 1.4x, but I would not recommend the 2x converter. I wish the paint was a bit tougher and would avoid chips, but you can't expect it not to chip when banged against cement or metal. Ooops. :-)

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Pros: Excellent range on a 1.3x body, excellent build quality, smooth operation, good closeup ability.
Front element Extends, a little soft at 2.8 (to be expected)

This is an excellent mid-length zoom lens, especially on the 1.3x bodies. The build quality is excellent, and this has become one of my most used lenses. I didn't think that would be the case. The closeup ability is excellent (not macro, but better than any of my other lenses). There is a lot of bad mouthing about this lens lately, but I think some of that can be chalked up to user error. There may be some valid issues, but if you have a good copy of this lens, it knocks the socks off the competition. Highly recommended.
