Review Date: Sep 13, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,300.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: light weight; weather seal; internal focusing
Cons:
slight CA but can be corrected by ACR; lens tube does not feel like metal

..since there are so many negative reviews about this lens spreading out the forums, for the first few days i got the lens, i was a little bit worrying if it is worth paying double to get just 1 stop faster from f/4 to f/2.8..after weeks of experiments, i was very much released and start to love this gem...

..the advantage of 16-35L over 17-40L is the great low light hand held performance..though some may mention about the corner sharpness, in my opinion, most of people would hardly notice the corner sharpness difference between 16-35L and 17-40L at f/11 or f/16 of daylight landscape photography...

.. when widely open, the sharpness of 16-35L for sure won't match my 85L or 180L, but the picture quality is still acceptable to me...

..besides, this lens can also be used for close-up photography to get special perspective of small objects..the bokeh generated at f/2.8 could definitely not be repeated by 17-40L at f/4...

..i would say, people who have not tried all the aspects of 16-35L but rated it a very low mark are not eligible for the comment of the lens..in fact, as long as you get a good copy, you will never look back to 17-40L...

Review Date: Sep 11, 2006 Recommend? | Price paid: Not Indicated

Pros:
Cons:

..after months of experiment, i notice the CA of this lens is significant when wide open especially for low light high contrast objects, which unfortunately could not be easily corrected by ACR, and itís even more noticeable than on screen display when enlarged to a print...

..the other thing does not make me feel great is the front element extends when focusing..to prevent lens from dust when unmounted, you have to zoom to infinity to retract before turn off the power...

..i know nothing is perfect, so it is still one of my favorites..here are some sample pix:

Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM

Review Date: Sep 6, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,200.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: everything of a macro lens dream
Cons:
not f2.8

..this is the first canon lenses came with my first canon dslr, 5d..i was very impressed by the cool metal tube of the lens when i touched it for the first time, and it soon became my favorite lens with no regret to skip 100 macro...

..the wide manual focus ring make it very precise when focusing..the nice creamy bokeh proved there are really somethings photoshop can't do..this lens narrowed my vision but broadened my world with inspirations...

..some people complain about the weight, non-IS and slow AF (actually it's pretty fast when switch to 1.5m to infinity)..isn't this lens supposed to be mounted on tripod, manual focusing and shutter released by remote control with mirror locked up?..then why should we pay extra money for IS and faster AF instead of a sturdy gitzo?...

Pros: as others posted
Cons:
loose manual focus ring

..this is actually my first canon lens comes with my first canon dslr, 5d...

..i know there is 85/1.8 out there, but Iíd rather spend more time on taking good pictures than fiddling around with qualities of different lens...

..every pros for listed here is proved, tack sharpness, nice bokeh, vivid contrast, low light handheld possibility, faster focusing, tank build, blah blah...

..any cons?..yes, the very loose manual focus ring makes me feel not that great..well, nothing is perfect...

..weight?..many people complain about the weight, but i guess thatís where the quality comes from..how can i blame...

..price? .. for sure itís not worth every penny..the thing is, did mercedes buyer ever consider of cost-effective things?...
