Review Date: Dec 13, 2016 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Aperture, build quality, sharpness, resolution, lens flare, autofocus accuracy
Cons:
Autofocus speed, exposed rear element

In my opinion, the Canon 85mm f/1.2L II USM is the definitive portrait lens if you are shooting Canon. It is my primary lens for studio and natural portraiture, and gets regular use for products and art reproduction. Itís list of strengthís is long (see above) and weaknesses short (again see above). There are lenses that are also good for portraiture, but quite frankly if I have any control over the focal length I need for a portrait, I will choose this lens.

One intangible benefit is that it makes you a better photographer as you learn how to use it to its full potential. It is not the easiest lens to master, but it has many properties that open up creative options for styles of photography that others donít. It has beautiful lens flare, something that would be considered a fault on other lenses. The depth of field presents as many challenges as it does benefits, and the resolution makes you consider the lens for jobs you would not at first consider it a candidate (eg astophotography).

Iíve written a whole article on the use of this lens in the field as a professional photographer, including over 100 sample photos and a collection of full resolution JPG and RAW DNG files for download and analysis. You can find it at:
