Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Review Date: Jun 21, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $840.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp, image stabilized, beautiful colors, focuses faster than my Tamron 90mm Macro. Top quality, great investment.
non so far.

This canon 100 f2.8 IS macro lens I hesitated to purchase because I already have the Tamron 90mm macro, which was pretty good for the price.

The Tamron hunted often, and I wanted to have an image stabilized lens, and basically upgrade my macro gear. The price of this new L lens is reasonable and the lens performs so well, I realized it was an excellent investment, not only holding it's value in resale, but one of the sharpest lenses I own. I love it! I can't think of one reason why anyone would regret this purchase. A great value, and considering canons lenses have gone up in price these last two years, I have a feeling this macro will not only become the standard top macro glass, but the value will hold or even surpass what it sells for right now, even used.

No regrets, top quality, nice contrast qualities and sharpness, a notch above my Tamron macro, worth the upgrade.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

Review Date: Nov 19, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,140.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Excellent walk around for children shots, zoos, some birding, pairs up well with the wider shorter lenses. Fast focuses, IS really helpful. Weight of it is a joy. Works well with the 1.4x teleconverter.
No negative remarks at all, I am thrilled to have this lens, and plan to use it alot along with my 24-105f4IS, a perfect combo. Wish it would allow one closer, but the 12mm canon tube will get you two ft. from target.

Everyone asks, is the extra $600 worth the IS?
If you hand hold, YES.
Tripod, probably not.
If you need it for low light, YES
If you have other lenses for low light you probably will prefer them.

I never owned the older f4, so I can't compare quality or clarity. But this lens is a perfect walk around compliment to the wider, shorter lenses. I bought it because it is light weight. I even have the 2.8 version, and am selling it, just too heavy for me to lug all day.

I would say the best advantage is the weight, the IS, the color, very fast focusing. The IS is most noticeable when you are shooting fast things like children playing, etc. The light weight lens whips around pretty fast the the IS helps stablize quickly. I immediately noticed the ease of use and high percentage of clean shots.

Its a joy to tote around, the low light issue being not any different than any other f4 lens. I figure most usually you'd use less than f2 anyway, although for sports I'd choose the heavier 2.8.
Just P.M. me if you want photos. I've had so much fun with this lens, including birding.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Review Date: May 6, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,250.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: If you are tired of lugging alot of lenses around the 24-105 is the one to get. The optical quality is outstanding.
Takes some getting used to in low light. But after you get to know the lens, its pretty consistent in quality photos.

My first L lens, so I don't have much to compare it to. I do now have the 300mm f4 L and both are top quality in color and clarity, and equal in worth.

I can say after using the 24-105 for 6 months that it is now always on my camera. A perfect walk around, I'd say its best qualities are landscape and outdoors. If you want a portrait lens you might want a f2.0 of sort to compliment the 24-105.

The IS is excellent, fast focus and useful down to 1/8 sec photos. If anyone wants to see a few pics just email me.

I had a few issues like a few low light pictures that disappointed, but what can one expect from a f4? I think people have picked this lens apart, but overall, after you get used to this lens you won't put it away. Some photos are so sharp, no processing is needed. Consistent, quality photos.

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

Review Date: Jul 1, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 8

Pros: Decent size, not too heavy for hand held. Reasonable price for those who don't need to use a 300mm very often but want one for trips, etc. Clarity better than expected.
Doesn't hunt flying birds well. But I got some great handheld wildlife shots otherwise. Not great in low light, but what is at this length, other than an L prime?

This lens is better than I expected after reading the reviews. I have a few practice shots, and some full size crop/unprocessed shots here:[pg 1 and 2]

also got this low light at 300mm of a bear in Yosemite, hand held:

Does well in bright light, higher shutterspeeds and aps, and really did the job for me. I don't use a tripod, and needed the IS for that, 300mm for occasional wildlife shots. I shoot in the Shutter mode for more clarity. Definately does not compare to an L, but suffices, for those who don't want huge lenses.

Works for me until I decide to shoot alot more bird and fast wildlife shots. Doesn't hunt birds well. I compensate for focus on the bird with a still shot focus and then capture at high shutterspeed as it takes off.

Tamron 24-135MM F/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical (IF) Macro

Review Date: Jun 7, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $350.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Great range, clarity and optional wide angle/macro as well. Perfect walk-around lens. Can't beat it for the price. No regrets on this first non-canon lens purchase.
Zoom ring a little tight. Baby finger may catch on the focus ring as it focuses. A little heavy, but compact, which is good, for those who don't like lugging large/long lenses around, this one is perfect. 72mm filters more expensive.

I've only had the Tamron for a week, but I immediately loved it. I have the Canon 17-85 IS, so I really didn't need this, but I find the "85"mm just isn't enough sometimes, and I hate changing lenses all the time.

The added plus, is I now have a Wide angle lens plus a great Macro range too! This lens is very consistent for me, maybe even a little faster focus than my canon mid price lenses.

The colors are true, and clarity is superb for this price range. This is the final answer for everyday use, parties, landscapes and macro. Comes with perfect hood and nice storage bag.
