Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Review Date: Mar 15, 2016 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $130.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Cheap, cheap, cheap and improved in many ways.
Cons:
Not so nice bokeh, focus by wire.

This is the third iteration of the original EF 50mm f/1.8 double Gauss design from the 1980. So, in terms of bokeh and image quality, there are only small gains (due to newer coatings and more precise manufacturing). But the advantages of the STM version are more subtle:

+ metal mount (finally)
+ seven rounded aperture blades
+ shorter max. focus distance
+ new STM AF motor (faster and more precise, also more silent)
+ FTM (at least in AF Servo)
+ better overall build quality

Downsides are:

- still not so nice bokeh
- massive vignetting on FF
- manual focus only works with the camera turned on
- still not as fast and silent as USM

All in all you can't beat the new 50 regarding value for cost. The AF is more precise and snappier than ever before, although nowhere near USM territory. For this price and performance, it's a no-brainer.

Review Date: Mar 15, 2016 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $990.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: It is as good as they say! Sharp, cheap (for a L) and not too big.
Cons:
Light LCA (purple fringing) wide open.

Great performance for the money. This really is a tremendous lens with soft bokeh and razor sharp images, even wide open. No wonder Canon keeps producing it till 1996!

My ideal portrait lens (headshot) on FF (6D)!

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS

24-70
Review Date: Mar 15, 2016 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $650.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Light, compact, sharp and grat IS. Macro modus is surprisingly useful
Cons:
Quite expensive. "Only" f/4.

I got this as a kit to my 6D and there it performs admirably. I like the sharp and crisp images as well as the good contrast. The zoom range is quite short but the 24mm is the strongsuit of this lens whereas 50mm is a little bit on the weak side.

The macro feature is quite handy although can't compete with a dedicated macro lens. Nevertheless it's a nice add-on.

I did not have any issues with RSA with my copies. Maybe luck or bad eyesight. :-)

Can recommend this lens to anyone as a standard kit for a Canon full-frame body.
