Description:
This new lens does what many pros thought couldn't be done - replace the previous L-series 28-70 f/2.8 lens with something even better. Extended coverage to an ultra-wide angle 24mm makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever.

Pros: Solid construction, quality images, sharp/contrast is great.
Cons:
AT first I thought the weight was an issue, but got over it quick.

I replaced my EF-S 17-85IS for this lens. Granted, It's twice the price, but it's worth it. I just love this lens--- it's my new "walkaround"lens!!

Pros: Sharpness, great built quality, bokeh, precision, fast in low light, fast focus.
Cons:
a bit heavy.

This lens is a great L lens. On eof my favorite. Great building quality, great bokeh, autofocus is fast. ğlens allows you to take inside pictures faster. My favorite lens for in town pictures and some Outdoor.

Pros: Sharpness, good background blurring wide open, fixed minimum f/2.8 aperture, my favorite lens. I'm going to shoot a wedding with it next weekend.
Cons:
Yeah, yeah, price and weight.

I use this lens most often on a Canon EOS 1D Mark II. It focuses fast and provides me with excellent color and sharpness. Many people decry its weight, but I've noticed (and maybe this is just me) that the heavyness allows me to hold the camera more still. When something is very light, I tend to vibrate more. I notice the weight when the camera is hanging on my neck though. I also think the size sorta scares potential photographic subjects.

Just me I guess.

In any case, this is a wonderful lens, and the only thing that bugs me about it is that Canon will make a smaller, faster, wider version for less money at some point.

Pros: f/2.8
Cons:
WEIGHT and SIZE. Too Expensive

Allow me to be the only person on this site that gives this lens a bad review.
I read almost everything that you guys have said about this lens and I after thinking about it forever, I bought it.

For those who love this lens, I have to say great.
But those guys who are thinking about this lens, make sure you go to a store and see it and hold it in your hand and on your camera.

It is a heavy brick ( 2lbs) and huge in size. In my hummble opinion, totaly unpractical to treat as a walk around lens. it's so heavy I could not get clear pictures with it. With a monopod, well of course you get an incredible L quality picture.

I switched to 17-40 f/4L. Much lighter and more managable as a walk around lens with superb L quality image. The shortfalls is f/4 and not f/2.8.

I hope this helps someone.

Pros: sharp, build quality, color, focus and it is a L
Cons:
none, well maybe price but after you take your first shot, you forget about that real fast.

I read about about 1,000 different opinions on this lens, and if was given anything under a rating of a 5 it was becuase of price or weight, not because of color or contrast. This is my favorite Canon Lens by far, and on the 20D with a 1x6 crop turns into a DOF to about a 38-112 which makes it a great all around lens. As soon as my newborn son gets to 6 months old i am selling my 35mm 1.4L since i will not really be needing the extra stops it gives me for low light. I have taken many shots at 35mm with the 24-70 and 35mm and you can not tell the difference, oh what beautiful bokeh.

Pros: sharp, contrasty, excellent build quality, fast focusing.
Cons:
none

Coming from the 17-40L and the 70-200L, I decided to get a standard zoom lens, and the 24-70L is it. While not super wide, nor super long, this lens does a great job of rendering sharp, constrasty images on any body I've used it on. I typically have this as my "walk-around" lens on my 1D, and it is a delight to shoot with.

I would not hesitate to recommend this lens for anyone whose pocketbook can afford it.

Pros: Sharp, very good build, weather/dust sealing.
Cons:
Size and weight, but not to much.

I had a Sigma 28-70mm which I liked but had some issues with it.
I looked at the Tamron which is also very good.
But the buildquality of this lens was the breakthrough for my decision which to buy.
it is a bit big with the lens hood but also impressive Smile
I love this lens!!

Pros: An excellent walk around lense. Outstanding construction and weather sealing mates of well with 1DM2. A fast 2.8 for the situations where flash is appropriate (ie weddings and or mood). Sharp with good contrast for what I need it for.
Cons:
None to speak of.

Pros: colour saturation, image quality, solid construction, dust and weather tolerance
Cons:
small amount of lens flare, L craze damn canon and their L series lenses

as an australian landscape photographer i need a lens that stands up to a bit of abuse in terms of salt, dust moisture etc. this lens does that.

the lens hood is okay however it is a little flimsy for my liking but you may be different. the colours that this lens produces are unreal, they are just so true to what you are seeing which is what most off us need, this is the most noticable point along side with the sharpness of the pictures. incredible colour saturation when used with velvia 50 asa or provia asa very impresed.

image sharpness is great especially for a zoom, basically a great lens that everyone should have in their bag if they are afer superior true quality images.

Pros: Well built, fast for a zoom (2.8), good color and almost no distortion
Cons:
Too pricey, not too sharp at 70mm@2.8 compared to a prime (50mm@1.4), heavy

I bought this for my 10D (in the beginning I had a 24-85 "standard" lens, but was way to soft for my taste...) and in the end I'm quite happy with it. I say "quite" because the lens is very expansive and I was expecting a little more, maybe (a lot of people semms shocked from the supposed quality of this lens).
In the sharpness department it works fine from 24mm to 50mm (with his "sweet" zone @5.6 and above); beyond that "red line" goes in the realm of softness, at least in my opinion. But in the end it's useful, fast and give me better results than the old 24-85 (it cost four time more, anyway).
The focus is fast and silent but it's not always accurate, resulting in slighly soft pics from time to time, but this is a problem of the 10D and the clumsy AF of the camera, I guess.
It's a good lens if you are lazy and want something to leave fixed on the camera all the time, becuse for the same price you can buy a 28mm 2.8, a 50mm 1.4 and a 85mm 1.8 and have razor sharp pics...
In the end it's the best zoom of his cathegory, if you accept the fact that zoom lenses ARE NOT SHARP AS PRIMES!

Pros: Verry sharp and brilliant pictures with good color, excelent zoom lens
Cons:
High price, big lens hood.

Just bought the 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens. Compared to my old 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM lens it is a big jump forwards. Sharper and more brilliant pictures. It is amazing. Very fast focusing. I you want to buy a near perfect zoom lens this is the one. I am using it on the EOS-10D, excelent combination.

Pros: Fast Focus, Robust, Silent, Fantastic Color and Contrast
Cons:
HEAVY! Price!

This is the best all-around lens you can buy. I am aiming for wedding photography and this would be my first choice. Using an EOS 10D, the wide angle is wide enough for group portraits. The lens gives a beautiful bokeh.

Focus is extremely fast and silent. The color and contrast also amazed me. I get slightly better results with this lens than the 70-200 F4 L that I have, although the 70-200 is a better value for your money.

If you can overcome the price and the bulkiness then I would highly reccommend this lens.

Pros: Sharp as a tack and solid build which seals well.
Cons:
This lens hood is a little better then the other rubbish on my other L lenses, the lens bag is useless.

Used this lens for a two weeks shoot in Northern Australia shooting crocodiles in the heat dust etc . A better test would be hard to find, and it passed 'with flying colours' unlike the lens hood on my 70-200 f2.8 IS. which fell off in the water with two crocs 'spitting distance' away.
Canon makes good lenes but makes crap hoods to match the glass.
This is a good zoom.

Pros: Built like tank, 2.8, fast focus, sharp
Cons:
Big, heavy, little pricey

This is an awesome lens. Having coming from a 16-35 and 50 1.4 combo, I wish I would have gotten this lens first! This lens is SUPER quick to focus(on a 1D) and gives incredible background blur. It is a bit heavier and bulkier than I thought but balances nicely on your camera. The one complaint I might have is that the lens hood is HUGE. But once you put it on the lens itself, its not as bad.

Pros: Good results also on full aperature (f2,8), excellent hood, good weight together with my 1Ds camera
Cons:
Strong barrel distorsion on wideangle (24-28mm). Not as sharp as the 70-200/2,8L IS.

I've just tested the 24-70/2,8L mm against my 70-200/2,8L IS with both zooms on 70mm. Without tripoid the 70-200 (with the IS on) is clearly sharper. It is also sharper on f2,8 than the 24-70 on f8. (Shutter speed about 1/1000 s).
But compared with my previous zoom, the 17-40/4L, the 24-70 gives much better results on full aperature (f2,8). And you don't have the same problems with cromatic aberation in the corners.
The weight and size of this zoom goes well with my EOS-1Ds camera and it has a very effective lens hood. It works very well in sunlight because the front of the lens is moving in and making the hood deeper when zooming towards tele. Just genious!
Some negative aspects? Yes, the barrel distorsion on 24mm wideangle.
Some wishes? Yes, I miss the Image Stabiliser on my tele zoom.
