I bought this for landscape as my 24-105mm is lacking in sharpness in the corners. This lens delivers. Many are complaining about the price. I agree at $849 it is overpriced but with rebates and discounts I got it for $649 and that is fair for this quality. I could not justify $1500 for the f/1.4. The dxomark score for this lens on a 5D2 is 26 compared to the f/1.4 score of 28.

I honestly don't understand how people can say a bad thing about the picture quality of this lens. The introductory price is indeed quite expensive, but now when the price has come down quite a bit the lens has quite a few things going for it.
This lens has excellent contrasty color. The central sharpness is very high with great clarity. It is easily better than 17-40 L and 24-105 L at 24mm.
It also compare quite favorable to my Zeiss 21 2.8 in color and sharpness eventhough they have different focal lengths.
I often go on hiking with this 24 2.8 IS, the 40 pancake and my 70-300L. The kit is relatively light and cover everything I need to shoot nature.
If you have a telephoto such as 70-200 or 70-300, it makes a lot of sense of combine it with the pancake and 24. 2.8 IS. Since all 24-70 2.8 room are heavy and quite expensive meanwhile these two lenses weight about 400g and cost less than 800$. (I bought 24 2.8 IS for 629$ and 40 pancake for 150$). The quality is super, too.

I'm currently renting this lens and several others for another round of testing ahead of my next purchase. Bottom line - this lens is no better in terms of IQ than the $200 version it replaced. Considering that you can probably get good copies of the 24mm f2.8, 35mm f2 and 50mm 1.8 Canons for less than the price of this 24mm USM IS I would find it hard to recommend. If it were a bridge in IQ between the old EF 24mm 2.8 and top flight lenses like the Zeiss ZE 25mm f2 or 24-70mm LII then I could recommend it and would likely even buy one, but it is not and the difference in price over the older 24mm would be better spent elsewhere. My Tamron 24-135mm SP is almost as good and a much better value.

I bought this lens cause I need a small, light and easy to use lens that even my wife can use it. Anyway, the 24 f/2.8 IS delivers what I expect from it. I really like this lens. I mostly use it at f/4 to f/6.3 and I like the result, they're sharp. On the rare occasions that I use it wide open at high ISO, the image stabilizer works wonder, and it is sharp wide open.

I bought this lens mostly for its compact size and good sharpness (based on the published MTFs).
The lens delivers in both respects. Sharpness is very good wide open; the lens is compact and the IS is very silent (haven't tested its effectiveness, though).
Overall, a very nice lens which I'm sure will become more attractive after its price drops a bit.

Very good build close to L standard and much better than 50 mm 1.4. No play and wobble. Silent IS and fast AF.
At 2.8 sharper than 24 - 70 mm (old model) and at 4 or 5.6 about equal. Extreme boarder sharpness is much better than 24 - 70 mm up to f 8
