I Bought this camera last year with 18-105 VR for travel, i have also a D300 and S5Pro, the IQ of the camera is awesome! I improved the handling with a BG now for travel is a perfect combination of quality and size!

Pros:
|
Excellent image quality, easy to use, swivel monitor, compact size, nice kit lens
|
|
Cons:
|
No hood for the kit lens..No video editing software

This is my first attempt at video in this kind of camera and really have enjoyed being able to take video of this quality. The downside is the lack of video editing software.
The photos i have taken, mostly wildlife and landscape have been very colorful, contrasty and sharp. I am learning to use the various scene modes and the results are suprisingly good. I was pleasantly surprised at the sharpness of the kit lens, it would have been nice had Nikon put a lens hood in the kit.

Size, price, image quality, good (not great) meter

Cons:

Most controls are menu, not button, driven, lots of plastic, uses SDHC cards (I have tons of CF cards)

I bought a D5000 + 18-55 VR kit as a small travel package, and have been happy with the results. Image quality is on par with my D200/D300's, but not as good as my D700 (duh).
The D5000 feels good in my hands, but having to drill down in menus to change things like ISO and Exposure Comp gets a little old. I also seem to somehow move my AF point somehow, so I have learned to double check that it is where I want it (center AF point).
Of course you can only use AF-S lenses, but that was not a factor in my purchasing decision.
