I switched over from canon to nikon and bought the d90. All I have to say is I wish I would have done it years ago! Everything is much better. The design, controls, layout etc. Everything is where I would want it to be, which makes the ease of use very high.

AF, (especially off-center points) while very good, is not in the same league as the IQ.

Short version: The D90 is the best camera I've ever used. The only reason to own a D300(s) or D3/s/x is superior AF, weather sealing, high frame rate, or mind boggling sensitivity. Everything else a photographer could want, the D90 delivers.
If you aren't getting images that look great at 11x17 or bigger from the D90, it isn't the camera's fault. Look at your lenses, your support, or in the mirror for better results.
When I first switched to Nikon, I started with a D40, 18-55, and 55-200VR, and a cheap video tripod. My D90 has delivered increasingly improved results as I've added a Manfrotto tripod & ballhead, 18-70 DX, a pair of SB-600s, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Sigma 70-200 2.8, and Tamron 180mm Macro. My D40 is probably jealous of all the attention my D90 gets.
I can recommend the D90 without reservation to its target market, the advanced amateur and enthusiast, especially now that it goes for $800 US.

I came to d90 from canon 40d... I am still looking for AF speed.. But,this camera is beyond my exeptations. I cant leave it at home.. Always with me. cause it is small genius of photgraphy with his IQ and escellent image quality. Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and d90 is a great combo of street photography.

This is one fine little cam. For it's price it is hard to beat...
Pro:
- excellent IQ - clean up to ISO1600, ISO3200 more than usable. Sharp and crisp files with nice colors and contrast right out of the cam.
- excellent DR (can also push exposure/shadows in PP considerably without any severe penalty).
- consistent and reliable metering.
- excellent handling.
- small and light but with a more than decent grip.
- long battery life (about 1000 RAW exposures + some chimping).
- excellent LCD.
- pop-up flash.
- with fast CF cards, fast write and playback speed.
- playback zoom with one touch during review image.
- LiveView.
- 4,5 FPS (enough for me).
- PRICE.
- excellent choice of "cheap" DX lenses.
Against:
- limited AF: outer AF points not as accurate/reliable as the center one. The center AF point covers a relatively large area, so very precise AF isn't possible. Tracking and low light AF also leaves something to be desired (accuracy/sharpness).
- high ISO RAW files always have some NR applied to them, even if you have deactivated NR in the camera-menu. Results are very good up to ISO1600 though. At ISO3200 you will see some loss of detail because of this.
- no focus fine tune.
- no weathersealing.
- ackward position ISO button (have to take cam from my eye to adjust).
- only 96% VF (otherwise OK for a 1.5x crop cam).
- only SD cards.
- limited Video mode.
- relatively small write buffer.
- 1/200 flash sync speed.
- 1/4000 limited.

I just upgraded from a D40 I used for a year or less. I loved the D40- my first DSLR, and would reccomend it to anyone as an entry level camera into the Nikon line of products.
Having said that- the D90 feels like it is light years beyond the D40! The IQ, af, menu controls and on body controls are just So much better! Prices are coming down on these, so if you have a D40 and are wondering how big an improvement it is, and if it's worth upgrading to, the answers are- HUGE and YES!

Good feature set, nice build quality, good AF layout and performance, good LCD screen, video.

Cons:

It would be great to see some manual video controls added though firmware. A external microphone input would have been good.

I had a D90 for a few months and was pretty impressed with this camera! Lots of features and a very customisable camera (In many ways better then a Canon XXD series camera).
The D90 has a good viewfinder, good AF layout and performance, nice solid build quality (For a plastic body) nice layout of the buttons and controls, good rear LCD screen (920,000 dot pixels) and nice ergonomics. The D90 also has a built in AF motor, so you can still use AF-D lenses with autofocus.
The wireless flash transmitter (Nikon's creative lighting system) works well, and it was great being able to have the freedom to use a external flash off camera!
The video quality was good, but it would be great to see some manual controls added via a firmware update.
Overall, the D90 makes a great first d/SLR or a nice upgrade from a entry level d/SLR. The D90 has enough features and picture quality to keep most photographers busy for a long time.

I used this camera with the 16-85mm VR and the 70-300mm VR and absolutely loved it. This is probably one of the best balanced cameras that won't break your bank account and delivers great color, dynamic range and responsiveness. The AF isn't quite a D3 but you also didn't pay $5,000 for it did you?
