Coupled with fast primes this TC really shines. Outstanding IQ/AF speed
with my 200 f2/300 f2.8 VR's This little addition has actually saved me thousands
of dollars not having to purchase a 500...love when that happens!

I have used this converter on 2 lenses so far:
Nikon 80-200/2.8 AF-S;
Nikon 105/2.8 VR micro
And, I did a comparasion between the 105 + 1.7x and the 80-200 (which is considered as one of the sharpest lens from Nikon), there is no drop of image quality as I can tell.
In short, I don't have any negative to say about this one.

Bought this teleconverter in June 2008 to use with my 300f4 AFS Nikkor. Fantastic combo. Autofocus works well with adequate daylight. Image quality is quite good.
I chose the grey market offering due to the $75 price difference.

Sharpness (if you don't open it up)....flexibility, adds good reach to my 70-200.
|
|
Cons:
|
not as sharp as the TC1.4...
|
|
I bought this last year shooting large field sports like LAX and a lens larger than my 70-200 wasn't in my budget.
I was pleased w/ the combo. Note that I took the recommendations found here: http://zaps21.com/photo/TC17tests/TC17tests.htm
very helpful and as a result I scrupulously avoid shooting it wide open.
Now that I have a 120-300f2.8, I probably won't use it too much, but I'm going to hang onto it. I do think that I might add a TC 1.4 to my stable, in the future.

I'm an American living in Beijing. I have a D300 and a Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens. I bought the Nikkor TC14E II about 6 months ago. I read a review that it was amazinly sharp in combination with the 70-200mm f2.8 VR. It was. Now having bought the TC17E II, I wish I handn't bought the TC14E II. I think I will only carry the TC17E II, so I may sell the TC14E II. Not that the TC14E isn't super sharp (it is), but I don't need both, since they are so close. Once I find out how good the TC20E II is, I may end up with the TC14 and the TC20 and sell the TC17, since I think all three is overkill.
This review is not based on a lot of shooting, but I am very happy with the TC17E II. I saw that no one else had written a review, so I thought I should try to contribute something, even though preliminary.
