I'm thinking that the place looked quite a bit like this. That earth glow phenomenon is hard to describe (and not easy to photograph), but I've seen it with just this kind of hue and saturation, for example, at Mono Lake, where the color appears in the sky just after sunset and then is reflected in the water, bathing the whole scene in its tones.

Theo, clear skies in the west made the high cloud in the east light up in these pinks about fifteen minutes after sunset. It did indeed look like this.
Ron, it does make a nice b&w, couldn't bring myself to dump this colour. I'll send you a sample.
