Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting the Tamron AF 19-35MM F/3.5-4.5 for wide angle shots for my D40. I'm new to photography and was just wondering, will it autofocus with the D40? I wouldn't mind manual focusing as I do it all the time with the kit lens

Why the Nikon 18-55 kit lens is a better lens IMO.

I was looking for a wide angle lens.

then the 18-55 will be wide for you
and if that is not enough get the 12-24

So a 19mm Tamron is wider as a Nikkor 18mm

Then the 12-24 Tokina is what you want. The 19-35 is full frame and equals about 28-50 on the D40. Or try the Sigma 10-20MM lens.

the Tokina will not focus...

if you want to go wider than the standard kit lens (18-55), you have to go for a Nikkor 12-24 (very expensive, costing more than twice the price of the camera) or the Sigma 10-20, an excellent wide zoom with HSM (built in motor), allowing to focus on the D40.
But anyway, there are no cheap solutions, that's one of the serious limitations of the D40/D60/D40x bodies.
