Hi,

Just recently bought the 40d with the 17-85mm IS kit lens - love the camera and lens seem to produce very nice quality pics.

Only downside is the aperture size...from what i have read, i am very tempted to buy the 17-55 2.8 as i will be taking quite a lot of low light indoor photos......4-5.6 just isnt wide enough.

I have been trying to read and learn as much as i can - and the plan is to get the 17-55mm, then the 70-200L 4 IS, and perhaps the 85mm 1.8 prime - the question is, would it be stupid not to get rid of the 17-85mm?

For what it is worth, i can probably sell it for the same price as i basically paid for it.

The majority of my shots will be portraite type shots - or can some more seasoned users recommend a different combination??

Cheers,

On the contrary, I'm guessing you'd likely be selling it for the amount that someone else would be paying for it new, not what you paid for it as part of a kit deal.

I had the same deal, got it as a kit lens. I will tell you once you buy a 17-55 f2.8 then your 17-85 will never get out of the bag so if you need the low light capabilities then sell it and go with a 17-55.

Effectively paid £200 for the lens, checking on ebay, everyone seems to be getting just over £200 is what i mean!

I think you are right David, but just think 55mm might just be a little on the short side, so thinking to myself, that if I keep the 17-85, i might sometimes just carry that for more general purposes......or am i really lying to myself and being lazy with not selling it!
