I have someone offering me their semi beat up 28-70 2.8 lens for $450... comes with polarizing filter, caps and lens hood. No box or papers. Good deal?

Thanks,
Zander

what do you mean by "beat up"?

There is wear on the body - paint wear etc. but the optics seem to be fine. A few scratches on the distance scale, but nothing too major.

If the glass is reasonably clean and the lens functions fine, then that may be an OK price. Also, make sure the lens focus calibration is accurate before you close the deal.

He also says it has (quoting email) "regular factory-certified maintainence".

When I hear that sorta thing about a lens I start to worry.

That's a good price according to jcolwell's database.

I expect that's a great price, assuming the lens is in good working order. I loved my 28-70L/2.8, maybe even more than the 24-70L/2.8 I replaced it with, but I really do use the extra width.

GREAT price if the optics are pristine. Just go to the seller with a camera and laptop and check out a 100% shot!
