Images are just one part of the total picture. AF accuracy, tracking, and speed are critical. Build quality is very important if you shoot in all kinds of weather and conditions. Fast manipulation of settings when working is critical. Burst speed can be very imporant at times. So I don't find comparisions of say the 5D to the Mk3 meaningful. The mk3 looks like a winner...now, where do you pre-order one?

...just placed a pre-order for mine this morning.

Main reason...one of my 1D Mark II bodies is approaching 800,000 shutter clicks
and I was thinking of a purchasing a Mark II n...but was a little concerened about a new model coming out in the fall of 2007.

The Mark II is the only camera that I have ever owned that had high enough resolution to photograph a wedding on a Saturday afternoon and is fast enough to photograph bull riding on Saturday night....the Mark III will be even better!

This is good timing.

I would have thought people would have learned from past experience when making decisions based on sample images. The 5D also had equally "impressive" sample images, and there were plenty of people stating how poor the image quality was, but that doesn't seem to have been the case from 5D owners now they actually have the camera. I wish Canon wouldn't even post those sample images, since every time we get people micro-analyzing a few pictures we know little about in terms of how they were taken, the photographer, the associated equipment, the camera settings, the processing, etc. Maybe this time we can just wait for some real results before we bin this one too as many did the 5D.

Exactly, well put.

I look at this camera and start to drool. I have a 30D and a 5D and am seriously thinking of selling them both to purchase this bad boy. 10FPS! That's just rude!!! Plus, now the megapixels are up to where I think at 20 X 16 prints should be just fine. Now I just have to get a second mortgage to pre-order mine.

I'm glad to see that Canon is innovating again in areas other than framerate and image quality. I have personally never suffered for the 8.5 FPS (as opposed to 10), but the live preview on a giant 3 inch LCD is proof that Canon is committed to improving the user experience as well. I can already think of many applications where the live preview will come in handy. I also noted that the new body is lighter, and more comprehensively sealed.

When these innovations come to the 1Ds line, I will likely pick one up to complement my 1D Mark II. The EOS-1 cameras are already fantastic machines, but the niceties on this new version really put it ahead of the pack in multiple respects.

Most of the time, the cycles to failure is expressed in terms of mean time to failure or mean cycles to failure. It's not that each shutter goes 299,999 exposures and then croaks in every copy....It means that a great many cameras may outlive their owners. I don't know, but strongly suspect this is a mean cyles to failure claim. As to any camera that gives you a solid 500k exposures....It doesn't owe you a nickel!

As to the 1D3 itself....the 5D meets my needs. ... exactly!

(slow, plodding, ff, and manual leica glass)...The 1D3 camera is a yawner in my little universe.

Warning 1 - DO NOT go to 'shutter durability' if you are not planning on buying this camera.

I was very disappointed at this one myself... 300,000 frames... I'll burn through that at least twice before the 1 year warranty is up!

Hammy.

I'm pretty sure the Personal Functions are gone, incorporated into the Custom Functions - this way you can set everything incamera, not needing to tie in to the computer to change some settings...

No way would I ever buy a mk3, but from the specs, it looks like a dream camera for anyone that takes pictures of anything that doesn't stand still. Kudos to canon for upping the game again even if its not in my league. The live view lcd is something I would like to see filter down to 30d type cameras. This would be a very useful feature.

If true, that's ANOTHER great change for the camera.

Having to set the things via computer was STUPID beyond belief.

Does anyone have any idea (or a good guess based on past history) when pre-ordering will be available at the main online stores such as B&H and Amazon?

I agree with David ...I've never liked the way the P-Fn.s had to be set. Nevertheless, I'm absolutely LOVING the ability to have ISO displayed in the viewfinder along with remaining shots simultaneously, and of course remaining battery power

There's nothing to hate, and everything to love about this camera.

I'll say it again (since it'll be the first time in this thread ): Canon really LISTENED to photographers and IMPLEMENTED the changes that were requested.

Kudos to Canon!

Nice feature set, but it's still BIG and HEAVY. Oh well, I didn't really need the temptation...

EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR will be similar to that of its predecessor, the EOS-1D Mark II N Digital SLR
Sigh .. and what did that just do to the market value of my trusty 1DMarkII
Has any body heard what the street price may be?

Regards,
Randy

I am torn about this. On the one hand, I love my 5D. On the other hand, it would be nice to have a weather-sealed camera with that kind of AF system to take with me to Alaska in July... Agghhhh....

No worries, the 5D does just fine in Alaska If you're primarily interested in critter photography, well, the 1D3's crop factor and FPS would be nice. For landscapes the 1D3's 14 bits would be nice but at the cost of some of the 5D's resolution. Otherwise, the 5D is still a great all around camera.

The 1D3 introduces a bunch of very nice features that bode very, very well for the 1Ds3 or whatever it's gonna be called. Think I'll start saving my pennies in anticipation

Cheers!

There is info covering that in this White Paper, originally posted by Ariel Bravy on pg 1 of this thread. It is in Sec III of the White Paper.

You would think an engineering student at Ga Tech would not have the time to post and research all those links. Good for you Ariel,

Thanks, and I though 8.5 fps stopped my heart, well, this is a full cardiac arrest. Thanks again.
