Just for a fun discussion, so please don't take it too seriously.

I have heard rumors about the specifications, but nothing is solid at this point. This year seems like the year that Canon should release at least one new APS-C DSLR to replace 7D, 60D or both.

If one is indeed released, what specs would you like to see the most? I currently own a 5D3 and a 6D, but I also keep a 7D for telephoto shootings. I'd be interested in the new 7D Mark II if it gets the following updates:

1. Improved sensor performance -- Obviously, better noise performance and possibly better DR.
2. AF Capability with Lens at f/8 -- That would be perfect for my use. I can then use a 1.4x with 100-400L or the like.
3. Silent Shutter Mode -- I find the silent mode of the 5D3 and 6D to be very useful and I hope the new 7D Mark II has this feature as well.


I'd take something else too, but those are my top 3. Something else is worth being mentioned though:

- AF Microadjustment at Wide & Tele Ends -- This should be a new standard though.
- Improved AF System -- Not saying the current 7D AF system is bad, but I sure hope Canon steps forward with it.
- LP-E6 Battery Pack -- Currently own 5 of these. Still want the compatibility.
- Built-in Flash -- Wifi and GPS are fun and all, but I find that built-in flash is useful in some occasions. Don't want them to get rid of it.
- Resolution -- I don't really care much whether or not they increase it.
- Continuous Shooting Speed -- I can live with 8fps, but 10fps would be awesome.
- CF + SD Slots -- It would be nice, but definitely not gonna be a deal breaker for me.

What do you think?

2. 8fps in lower light
3. GPS & WiFi

I think gps/wifi is a given.
12mp isnt going to happen, for good reasons!
8fps in low light you should be able to have with the 7d if canon fixed their bugs!

A clean 18-20mp sensor is all that I'm asking for.
Improved AF would be a bonus.
And don't increase the price, please.

1. Reduced noise, more DR, same or higher MPs
2. 5D3/1DXish AF with a fix for AF confirm and f8 usage
3. An articulated LCD.

I don't like high density sensors: the images are large, noisy and require a fast computer to process. You also need faster SS to avoid shake and this denies ISO advantage.

Have to disagree. I think 7D2 will use the same GPS dongle as 5D3.

Hopefully they add dual card slots and an APS-C version of 5D3/1D-X AF sensor.

As for file size just select sRaw or mRaw.

my 3 wishes are:

af from the 5D3 (it can have less points if the outer ones wont work)
2 card slots (at least 1 SD)
1.6 crop . with better iso performance. (not that i think the current one is as bad as some make out

next on the list but not essential:
the Wifi from the 6D
at least 8fps but with better opttions for the reduced FPS settings


with the above unless canon go silly on the £££ they will have my cash

1-New sensor Tech, not caring much about MP.
2-Hybrid AF. Having a really competitive contrast AF so we can focus whatever the aperture of the lens is
3-Focus peaking for MF lens
4-CF+SD card capability
5-3.5 inch screen
6-Bigger VF with higher magnification and keeping 100% coverage
7-Sorry already went way far from 3 top features

True, at pixel level, but it is relevant. This leads to larger files, slower processing and noise become more visible when you crop.

Maybe you have the camera that answers what you need right now--1D Mark IV. Technically, you can crop it to have about the same reach as 7D. It's really fast and accurate in low light. Of course, it doesn't have Wifi and GPS.

If you crop youwill have the same (or more ) noise on a lower mp sensor just fewer pixels and less detail.

As for file size you DONT have to select the largest available.

Canons 18mp crop sensor has the lowest noise of all canon aps-c sensors made so far, there is NO evidence fewer pixels reduce overall noise. none. Plenty proving the reverse infact.

I can't afford 1D class gear. Also, I don't like the size.

7D2 is interesting because I will be able to use my 12-24 f4. Considering my shooting style, 6D would probably be a better choice. Time (and money) will tell.

For stills, you can already contrast AF using Live View "Live" AF. This will work with lens combinations of f8 too! Note that the exposure will be set by the location of the magnify rectangle.
I presume you mean contrast AF while shooting video?

I don't always find focus peaking that useful for MF. See article section under "hardware and software features"

Things that need to stay:

the performance from the new Firmware. if canon cripple the 7D2 with a 6fram buffer when uing Raw+Jpeg they need shooting.
