NAS is probably a bit too slow. Something connected to thunderbolt might be a lot faster but then it is only for one computer. Your MP does not have tb but any new MBP will have it. |

Thanks for your feedback Alan. I appreciate it. I am kind of leaning toward getting a Mac Book Pro and just putting everything on a small portable drive and keeping it relatively simple. I like the idea of NAS, but it is more complicated and I am a little worried about speed. |

I have the same Mac Pro specs and have been frustrated with the speed of my machine (I am not a pro but do a fair amount of RAW editing). After reading Diglloyd's Mac Performance Guide and reading comments on the new Mac Mini, I decided to go with a Mac Mini 2.6 i7 quad-core with 16GB RAM, an added OWC 256GB SSD as my boot drive and drive for Lightroom catalog, etc, and get an external OWC MINI STACK USB 3.0 drive to store my photos, music, etc. on. Perhaps not an ideal solution for you but the Mac Mini with SSD should be really fast compared to my Mac Pro. |

I have the same system and Ram as you. However, cannot get on with lightroom at all and I use Aperture. To speed up the Mac Pro which is really a solid machine, I am looking at upgrading to a SSD. Currently I have the standard 640 GB drive but am only using 130 GB currently so a 240GB SSD should do the trick. I looked at the Excelsior PCI-E cards and boy, are they fast but at a price. Not sure I am quite ready for that yet. |
