have a pair of 430 ex IIs and see used 550 ex and 580's I for much cheaper than 580ExII's. Trying to find on the web if the wireless will still trigger newer flashes and havn't found the answer. Anyone Know?

EXACTLY! There are small tidbits of things to like about the newer flashes but overall I never understood the hoopla.

Consider though: there are some things YOU might want that the 550EX lacks. With newer cameras with internal slave flash control you can control an off camera 550EX. However, *I don't think you can* control the 550EX from the camera controls when the 550EX is in the hotshoe of the camera. You have to use the controls of the 550EX. This really doesn't bother me much because I find the 550EX controls enough for me or I use PW ControlTL system.

I was reading about this and thats true from what i read 550ex is by the back of the flash only.

Good to know. I'm trying to make the compromise between getting good enough gear and not overspending especially as I'm getting started. I feel like im splurging enough buying a 5d mark II and 24-70lII . Got to cut corners somewhere.
