I have not hid the fact here that I LOVE my Sigma 50mm for Canon and as far as I am concerned, mine is the sharpest copy they ever made (Bonus- no focus issues!). But I see myself doing manual focus a lot more lately- probably inspired by all the macro shooting I am starting on- and I am actually doing MF a lot more on non-macro lenses as well.

Should I move to a Zeiss? Or will I miss the AF in quick situations? If so, will the Canon 50 L serve me better? Should I just stick to what I know works for sure?

Stay with landscape/still leben work and you will be happy with manual focus.
Shoot anything else and you will miss AF.

I am guessing leben is tripod?

I will mostly be using the 50mm with planned shots, not spontaneous action. Not necessarily landscape though.

Still leben = still life. Tripod probably used, of course.

Your MF phase will run its course and you'll want AF. Also, ZE 50/1.4 is not wo problems. 50 L will give AF and MF plus 1.2!

What kind of problems does the ZE f/1.4 have?

If you love the Sigma so much, just switch it to MF and use it.

I agree w Michelle, if you want a Zeiss, get the 50/2 macro.

You'll regret selling the stellar copy of the Sigma. only upgrade if you can add and not replace.

i didn't like the 50/1.4ze. it was very, very average up to 2.8. i finally sold it and got the 50/2 and am much happier. i can't compare it to the sigma 1.4 as i haven't owned it, but its dramatically better than the canon 50/1.4.

L was worth it for me. 50mm needs to be AF for me. The 50 is my walkaround lens

I think it would be a difficult task to tell anyone whether or not they need AF.
MF vs AF, AF or IQ - 2 very personal choices.

I would do the same, if YOU can afford it. Owning a (like you said) "stellar" copy of the Sigma 1.4 is a very seldom luck. You might not get it back if you find out you miss it, later.
