Next time I would suggest using a cardboard cutout roughly the size of the subject, paint it black, and have them hold it in front of them while the rest of the scene behind does it's exposure. Roughly halfway through, toss the cutout out of frame, and pop your flash. You'll get a more solid exposure on the subject.

I understand by the title this might have been your intent to have model partially exposed with firetruck showing through. Perhaps having him stand where there aren't lights exposing through him would help the image not be so busy imo.

Nice shot in either case. I love night/twilight scenes.
