I've visited most of the markets and souqs in Dubai for street photography, and recently found a new one to visit.

Here are a few shots from the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market in Dubai. Lots of stall keepers and porters are from Pakistan and India, and local Middle Eastern customers (the men are generally camera shy, and the women are not approachable due to the local culture) are generally to be found there.

The market is covered but open on all sides, which means soft light at the stalls near the outside of the market and harder light in the centre from the sunlight through the raised central section of the roof, which creates a challenge.

Shots taken with D700 and 2/35 Distagon or 85mm f1.4D

Thanks Bob and Douglas! Lots of friendly and approachable people there - off to print some copies to distribute on my next visit. Lots of environmental portraits will spring from that.

I agree, street portraits do not get any better than this.
My pick is #2, that guy has got an incredible face with a very pleasant smile

Your images continue to amaze. Super street photography, all technically correct and composed oh so well.
And your processing is beyond reproach.
Great work here, Phil.
I am eager to see the next installment.

A real treat to view Phil. You really capture the humanity in these folks and that's something I appreciate. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks ratedkg, lazlo, Scott and Greg.

I'm definitely getting more comfortable approaching people and asking to take their photographs, so environmental street portraiture is fat becoming a favourite style of mine. It helps that the subjects automatically stare straight through the lens to create a connection without any prompting - there's a basic understanding of English but a complete language barrier so asking these guys to pose, or change location even by a couple of steps results in completely losing the moment. The payback for me is when I return with prints for them - you literally end up with dozens of people helping to track the guys down!
