The PDF manual confirms that there will be no AF @ f/8 aperture.
"With lenses whose maximum aperture is smaller than f/5.6, AF is not possible during viewfinder shooting. Also, AF with f is not possible during Live View shooting and movie shooting."

Does the 5D3 have the same issue? Considering it shares the same focusing system.

Yes, the Canon 5D Mark III can't AF with apertures slower than f/5.6.
