Amazing deals for canon goods lately! I remember when I first came to FM nearly last year when I scored the 70 - 200 II for $1600ish with the combo camera deal.

I have an older 430 EX (not EX II), would I gain much by getting the 530 EX II? I hoping to get into portrait photography soon, and my only other light source right now besides the 430 EX in my AB800

I've been contemplating the same thing, but I have the 430 EX II. The 580 would allow me to use 2 off-camera speedlites as opposed to one since the 580 can control the other. :-)

Other biiiiig advantage of 580ex2 over 430ex2 is the external pack - recycle times and battery livespan is dramaticaly increased. Dont think twice - just buy it.

Are you referring to the battery pack or the flash?

when I first started out I had the 430 EX II, it worked and did it's job.

the bad thing about this hobby is that you'll only want better, and it won't stop until you buy the best version.
lol, it's a little cliche but yeah i ended up selling the 430 ex ii, and paid the difference to upgrade.
the little features like the spin wheel & how the 580 ex II lets you twist it's head all around has made a huge difference for me. It all depends on how you shoot though. better equipment doesn't always mean better photos, the features are there to help you save time


also the fact that you can always sell the stuff back on FM at little to no loss
