Here's an even nicer, newer R lens (both are shift-only, no tilt): http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEICA-R-F-SCHNEIDER-28MM-PC-SUPER-ANGULON-R-F2-8-R-LENS-W-SHDE-NEAR-MINT/263191349404?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D47507%26meid%3Dc5a59e86c3ba4ab68c3461416766c5ef%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D292251120290&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

I'm not an expert, but I believe this lens isn't "a nicer, newer R lens" as you suggest, but the Schneider branded version of the lens they also supplied to Leica.

At some point, Schneider sold this lens under its own name and with a variety of lens mounts, including a Leica R mount, which they also sold separately, so owners could easily swap the lens from one mount to another. I'm not aware that there were any differences between the Leica and Schneider versions other than the font of the lettering on the lens.

As for its performance, I have a Leica version of this lens and used a Leitax mount to change it to a Nikon mount. The conversion works perfectly and the lens performs well, although it does render images with less contrast and apparent sharpness than many of today's modern lenses.

And unlike many photographers, I haven't found its distortion characteristics problematic, even for the architectural-related photography I typically do. <shrugs>

I don't use it often, but there are times when this look is perfect for the photo I'm taking, so I keep it around regardless...

FYI, Schneider also made a 50/f4.5 tilt-shift lens for Bronica that was sold under their name for their E-series 645 camera. They're fairly scarce these days (and priced accordingly if/when one does come up for sale) but could be easily adapted to a Nikon body and it was my understanding back in the day that it was a decent performer.
