Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach

Now the home of the Church St. Bernard de Clairvaux, this ancient monastery was originally built in Sacramenia, Spain where construction was completed in 1141 AD. The Cloisters and out buildings were purchased by William Randolph Hurst in 1925. The buildings were dismantled stone by stone and shipped to America in 11,000 wooden crates. Trouble with the US Dept of Agriculture led to loss of the packing lists and the pieces ended up being stored for decades until 1952 when everything was purchased by William Edgemon and Raymond Moss. It took 19 months to reassemble the blocks in their current location.

Photographing the gardens and buildings is free unless you bring a model, then they charge $200 for the privilege.
