Thanks for all the comments folks. I kept about 6 feet between he and I for the majority of our 15 minute escapade. He was just minding his own business, warming up on the dirt road then I came along and ruined his siesta (better me than a rancher, as they prefer to run snakes over).

5 minutes after my arrival he made an attempt to vacate, but I'd step in front of him to reposition (he was facing west). After a few minutes of this kind of dance, he decided to coil and stand his ground (now facing into the sun). Another five minutes and he backed down and headed to the bushes. I'd gotten what I was after and did not try to cut him off.
