Re: Leica M8/M9/X1 Picture Thread

Hi Phil: I have it. What do you want to know about it?

I haven\'t shot much with it, but posted the following early in 2012 here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/920070/464#10305232

First is CV50 uncoded then 50 Lux ASPH coded:

Notice any difference? There is some. The 50 Lux ASPH renders much smoother backgrounds. Some quick testing for OOF specular highlights indicates that the CV50 will produce brightline rings for OOF speculars behind the plane of focus, but not in front. I do like the character of the CV50 but it does purple fringe with high contrast transitions. Seems to be a \'feature\' of numerous CV lenses, such as the 40 and 75 f/1.8, though I haven\'t noticed it with the 35 f/1.2 II except when the the brightness difference is extreme...

Shot on the Ricoh GXR:

Four-way shootout:

GXR, cropped around 30% because the 90cm minimum focusing distance of the CV50 resulted in a pretty loose shot: 50 Lux ASPH, CV50 f/1.5, ZM50 Planar, CV40 f/1.4

WB based on the ZM image, brightness adjusted to match the white in the C of Canon. Of the various LR parameters, contrast was set to zero, black point at 5, clarity at zero.

Also, here is a link to some comparison images on the GXR between the CV and 50 Lux ASPH: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1043757/22&year=2011#10304916

My enthusiasm for the CV is fairly cool. It\'s a competent lens and sharp centrally but the purple fringing bugs me somewhat. That said, when I shot these, it was the era of Lightroom 3 prior to the current defringe tool, which will probably mitigate this problem. I guess in terms of look, it\'s somewhere between 50 Lux pre-ASPH and ASPH. The new redesign of the body is pretty slick looking, IMO, but it\'s optically identical to the old one which I have (though I think focusing is now to 70cm). For the money of the current version, I\'d rather spend it on a 50/2 Planar or the 50/1.5 Sonnar. The Planar is a more perfect lens with bolder Zeiss rendering (though busier OOF background rendering) while the Sonnar has more vintage character. Or for about double the price of the CV, a user grade pre-ASPH...
