Sorry did I read that right; you are now admitting it's not always possible to get closer and it's not just lack of skill.
IMO a good direction is to attempt to get closer while dropping FL of a lens. When successful, that results in a low weight and a low cost lens, and often yields better IQ.
Lately I have been experimenting with both strategies: get close and use a very long lens (see an example below). That will not last long though.
BTW, Pixie, I find your new avatar kinda distracting a bit.
