Some people have asked me for a sample RAW file of a person, so here's a DNG file you can look at. Note, because it is RAW you will need to adjust white balance correctly yourself. I'm not including the test shot with the grey card. This image is only to be used for evaluation purposes and may not be reproduced.

I'm not too worried about the Canon 1Ds3 :)

Excellent facial detail in the eyelids, eyebrows, skin texture and fine hairs at the hairline at 100%. Very impressive, indeed!

I'm looking for a program to open the file. Will CS2 work? or DPP? I'm working on a G5 mac. I know about dng but haven't worked with any yet.

CS2 should work. Can't test it as I run CS3 now.

Raw Developer on the Mac is a very good converter as well. Thats what I used to open it with. Since its DNG though, I would think CS2 should work fine.

LightZone!

Graham, could you post the details regarding camera, lens and digital back?

Graham:

It looks better than any Canon or Nikon file that I have seen.

Does the eMotion have a sensitivity to IR? In the DNG it looked like her black blouse has some IR problems in it. Your dedicated Sinar software may just correct for this in the profile.

It shouldn't. There is a normal IR filter over the sensor. Perhaps it is just the way the fabric looks because I haven't noticed this before.

Here is what ACR gave me. It definately looks like IR.

Excellent file. The eyes, forehead, hair, under nose skin texture is awesome, but what really pops out is the lips and teeth. Now that's detail. ISO 25 looks sweet.

I had to turn the standard sharpening settings that I use down in Lightroom for this file because of the sharpness, compared to the appropriate settings for my Canon files.

Was she wearing a black top or not? The above two images are quite different in terms of colour

It's probably a black top. When I pulled up the image in ACR (not the latest version) I got the same magenta cast as robsteve, and could minimize it but could not get rid of it.

Definitely an impressive file, though, and even better when processed properly.

Disregard the colour issue, because the DNG route is not my normal workflow and I probably don't have it set up properly. My preview JPEG is using my normal workflow and the black shirt is black as you can see.

I had to fool around with the DNG for quite some time to get the colors right.

But in the end, the top was black, her skin was a nice peachy color (none of that yellow stuff) and overall I was impressed by the image.

On another note, I just played with an awesome 1Ds3 file, and I must say, the 1Ds3 is doing very nicely..

Graham:

You may have done this previously and I missed it but can you post a landscape shot? Something with tree leaves in the background. It's OK also, though not required, if there's a cute model in the foreground :-). You've posted lots of shots like this but only web jpg's ... I don't remember a raw. No big hurry ... just when you can.

Thanks

IMPORTANT

After some feedback on this DNG file and especially some colour and highlight issues, I have to say that I have never used the DNG conversion before and it is not part of my ordinary workflow. Therefore the DNG file is only useful as a measure of the file's resolution and detail.

I chose the DNG format to try to be helpful but it only opened a can of worms.

So.. here is an 8 bit TIFF (16 bit was too large) of the same file exported as a TIFF from Captureshop with basic curves applied in Photoshop.

No colour correction applied, and the shirt is black as you can see. Some of the colour fringing is much better too.

Thanks Graham, it was fun to play around with this file.

As an example, here's what I got from Lightroom:

Hi Graham, I compared one of my own shots with yours. I was able to find something comparable. 5D, EF 85 f2.8, 1/30 and fill flash.

here is the pic, note the t-shirt, I made it myself ;-)

and here are the two shots compared, both were uprezzed to 7200px on the long side. The MF back is better in every way. The tonal range is a pleasure to work with, I did not care too much for best colours, though the tones should be comparable.

here

The 5d fails to deliver the sharpness of the e22, but I think it delivers pretty good detail. If we take Tariq's rule, you need to look the t2o crops at 50% in PS to see what a print of 16x24 would look like.

I downloaded the first version and processed it myself, hope this is ok
