p.1 #1 · What type of flash and 'softbox' for macro?
I have just ordered and received my wimberley macro bracket. I am thinking about using it with my 550EX, though I am afraid it's a little heavy. Wondering what type of canon flash you FM-ers use, and what kind of attributes you use on the flash. There are a lot of different (Lumiquest) 'boxes' that make the shadows softer, like mini softbox, softbox and big bounce.
What type of flash and 'box' do you recommend for macro shooting with a 100 or a 180 mm macrolens?
Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks John.
Nice picture, is that the MR-14 EX or the 430 EX with mini softbox?
What is it about the MR-14 EX that you like so much?
And, I am asking a lot, but could you illustrate that with pictures?
Thanks so much.

The shot that I posted before was with a 430EX and a Lumiquest Mini Soft Box.
I like the MR-14EX because of the diffuser plastic that Canon used for it -the quality of the light it produces is "warm" and very consistent. If you use the built in ratio control then you can control the shadows that the flash produces. Anyone who tells you that it's only good for filming dental work hasn't read the manual...
Here's an example with full E-TTL (letting the camera control the flash) taken before I started setting the FEC -1/3 (just to keep from blowing highlights and to boost the color saturation.
I'm linking that image from Flickr (first time I've tried it so I hope it works). Click on the image and check out the comments -lots of awards for a shot that wouldn't look the same without the MR-14EX...

Thank for the info, John. I can imagine the ringflash to be adequate for very short range, larger than lifesize photography, with full flash and objects with a background that's very close by (so that it won't go black).
Would you consider/advise the ringflash for fill flash on objects that are further away and less than lifesize?

Hi Stan,
Thanks for your reply, hadn't heard of these. Looks interesting, simple and multifunctional. Could you show some of the macro-pictures you have taken with it?
Thanks for your reply. Your rig looks very creative and exotic, but it's not really my thing to construct devices like this. It's also my purpose to use it out in the field, and I don't think your creation lends itself for that.
But thanks anyway.

I use it as a fill flash for natural light macro as well as the only light source when I'm shooting above life size -excellent results in both. Canon's ring flashes can pump out a lot of light...
