icon Canon @ PMA 2006 - PLACE YOUR BETS

Over the past 3 months I've seen lots and lots of posts by people prediciting, or sharing rumours, or hoping wistfully, for a variety of Canon announcements at the upcoming PMA in February. I am in the camp that NO ONE, under pain of non-disclosure, actually knows what Canon will be announcing.

Purely for the fun of it, I've posted a poll based on the various predictions made over the past few months. You get one vote.. pick which option you think is the most likely. Feel free to make a post about what you picked and why.

Time for FM users to put up or shut up -- do we know the industry or not? I'll confess I'll be interested in seeing how 'accurate' the vote totals end up being.

PS I threw in the "mk II primes" as options just for the heck of it.

I'll buy that full frame 1dMKII and never have to buy another camera. Thank God. It will finally be over. No more agonizing decisions.

Id love to see a 7D type camera. but doubt they would release it same time as 35D, which is much more awaited as it would cut income. The 18-70 would also cut profits on the 17-85 as no one would buy bot the 17-85 and 17-70, they are way to similar for that, so doubt it. I thought the 350D was prety new. personaly i dont see a big need for an upgrade there.

although i voted for a 20D replacement since 'the timing is right', I think Canon's greatest weakness right now is wide-angle low f-stop lenses -- primes or zooms.

There needs to be an 85L and 135L equivalent in the below 30mm space.

3000D - sub-300/350D rebel DSLR - Unlikely no real cost slot in the UK
25D/30D - incremental improvement to the 20D (10+ mpxl) - Very likely since canon are real trying to sell the 20D i.e. Cashback
"7D" - full frame in a model below the 5D, above the 20D - is there room for this?
70-200L f/4 w/ IS / A decent wide angle under 28mm w/ f2.0 or better - I can only hope - would I sell my non-IS...hmmm

There have been alot of rumors regarding a new version of the 85L and I would really enjoy a revised version of this lens.

I want to upgrade my camera from the 10D, so I am hoping for a reasonable price and a larger jump than the 20D. If nothing this year, I may go with the 5D. I would rather not spend that kind of money so hoping s 30D range body comes down.

I would vote if there were multiple choices.

I expect the following.

3000D or 3500D entry level 6mp jpg only (no raw) super basic DSLR)
30D or 35D or 50D, whatever it is called.
I see no more DSLR's announced at PMA

lenses,
50mm 1.2L
200mm 1.8L IS
100-300 2.8L IS
100 (or 200) to 400 f4L IS
600mm F4 DO

Possible lenses, or lenses I would like to see...
400 5.6L IS
70-200 F4L IS
upgrage to the 100-400L IS (same fstops, just better IS and do away with the push pull)

and maybe a couple more EF-S lenses.

While not at PMA, I do expect sometime in late 2006 to early 2007 the anouncment that the 1D and 1Ds series will be merged into one camera, doing away with the 1.3x crop. I also expect some time soon that Canon will either aquire Leica or outright buy them and we will see Leica EF mount manual focus lenses to combat the Zeiss ZF mount. I also expect that Canon will not drop film cameras, but not do major new releases beyond updating the current line up for things like E-TTL II and so on. I do expect a price drop in the film bodies. I think Nikon has made a poor choice in dropping film bodies in the US. I recently have been thinking about grabbing a old 1 body or 3 and playing around with some b&w stuff.

Wow, you have the Canon engineers very very busy!

i was going to go w/ multiple choice, but i didn't want 12 opitons with 100 votes each. :)

one question... why only F1.2L for the 50mm? Why not 1.0, like the discontinued model?

I think it will be interesting ro see if there is a 1Ds MarkIIn version brought out. If they don't bring it out, I think it definately signals that a totally new body is coming out. It would be nice if they don't call it the 1Ds MarkIII, but I guess we could call it the "hat trick" or "trey".

I'm hoping for a 70-200/4L IS for under a $1000, or at least some signalling as to whether one would ever come out. I think it would really stop a lot of people from looking at the 70-200/2.8 HSM from Sigma, if they were within $100 of each other.

I would love a 100/200-400/4L IS, but Nikon's version is wickedly expensive. What is it about 400mm @f4 getting sooo expensive, either in zoom or primes? I'd be happy with the old FD mount 400/4.5 optical formula.

I'm bored, so here my statements:

3000D - sub-300/350D rebel DSLR
-> there is no market for this. The 350D is already very cheap, people who want less buy a P&S
20Dn - minor improvement to the 20D, akin to the D70s
-> no sense in doing minor upgrade on a model like this, and the D70 is more like a competitor to the 350D anyways
25D/30D - incremental improvement to the 20D (10+ mpxl)
-> the most probable from my point of view. although I see a a problem with sensor size and increasing resolution (probable testfield for Digic III ?) Voted for that one.
"7D" - full frame in a model below the 5D, above the 20D
-> the 5D is already called a "niche"-product. This would be a niche inside a niche, getting very small if you ask me. Specially it would mean taking the 5D and cut down some more features to compensate for the low price but keep in the FF. Wouldn't do any good.
1D mk III - full frame, 20+megapixel, other improvements
-> from what canon said, unlikely. Next new pro body should be the get together of the 1D and 1Ds lines. If that's it, what's the point of the 1D Mk2 N?
18-70 f/2.8-4 EF-S 'walkaround' lense
-> have no clue about EF-S and what they plan, I don't really care either.
50mm f/1.0 mk II prime
200mm f/1.8 mk II prime

-> I put both in the category wishful thinking...
A decent wide angle under 28mm w/ f2.0 or better
-> Now this is MY wishful thinking....
"3D" based on the camera phone pics posted previously
-> haven't see those pics, but heck, I'd buy Canon-Phone...
Announce retirement of the 1.3 crop
-> Although many would not like to see that (I also think it's a nice compromise) I'm pretty sure this is going to happen sooner than later.
70-200L f/4 w/ IS
-> this would be a pretty cool lens, and then again, I'd have to sell my 70-200 4L

Man, I must really be bored. On the other hand there is hardly any more fun time, then during rumour season. That also where I get all my posts from :)
So, got to put my washing on the line :D

to add a floating rear lens group and get rid of electronically-linked MF, giving it proper FTM. can't do that if the contacts are floating in the rear element like they are now.

That dolls site also said it would have IS, which would be the greatest thing ever.

edit: the 100-300 2.8L would be insane also. i'm not a fan of white glass but i'd totally rock that.

I'll go against my better judgment and join in with some poorly informed speculation.

It's patently obvious that the successor to the 20D is due. I voted for the "25D/30D" but believe it will be called the 35D as in the "leaked" photos. I also believe there will be an 85/1.2 L II USM, again based on the cellphone photos.

I wouldn't be surprised if a new entry-level DSLR is introduced. If it's called the 3000D, it is likely to be even cheaper than the 350D. It may be more capable though.

I don't think we'll see a 1D Mark III at PMA. The Mark IIn just came out a few months ago. I'd look for a full-frame 1D Mark III this fall.

I wish Canon would reintroduce a 200/1.8. I also wish they'd give us some better wide-angle primes. How about a 35/2.0 USM Mk II? Or a 28/1.8 Mk II without the chromatic abberation? I don't see them doing a 50/1.0 again - but I'd like to see a 50/1.2 L.

We may see a 3D eventually, but probably not for at least a year.

That's my forecast, your tea leaves may vary...

I have no special insight but my opinion is that the 30D/35D upgrade to the 20D is a pretty safe bet. My hope is that it will be closer to a pro-level camera in features -- in fact, so close that it will fulfill my wildlife & sports shooting needs without buying a 1D MkIIN.
Then again, Canon may want me to buy a 1D MkIIN!

While I don't think there is a need for a 3000D, I do keep hearing from Camera dealers that there is indeed one, so I guess I will go with the flow.

There should be a new 20D, whether it is called 30D or 50D.

I don't think there will be a 7D or 3D. 5D is in that slot already.

While there could be a 1DsII N, replacement for for 1DsII should appear later this year. However, I really don't think there is a need for 1DsII N though, if Canon plans to introduce a new camera later this year.

There should be some EF-S lens, Canon in Japan kept saying they will develop more EF-S, so where is it?

I agree with Philippe, no 200 1.8 MKII. There is no market for it to warrant a lead free version.

My vote is for the 20D replacement. Nikon has brought game with the D200, the ball is in Canon's court.

I think the 7D is one of the furthest-fetched ideas. To get it in below the 5D would probably make it a full-frame camera with a 300D body. Lots of sensor, and that's about it.

New big aperture L primes? I don't think I'll ever tire of those lenses. By all means Canon, please do! If anything, we might see a revision, like this 85L II thing that's been floating around. Of course there are always people screaming for the return of the legendary 200, but most people want it back just for the hell of it (myself included). It's the camera equivalent of an exotic supercar: many will want one, few will actually have one.

stop guessing, why dont we just break into Canon HQ, just like the WaterGate Affair with form President Nixon, to find out exactly what they will introduce to the market. ;)

I will be the DeepThroat :).

We are going to make alot of $$$ together here.

My bet:
1. 25D/30D 10-12Mp body.
2. New 50mm and 85mm, 1.2 or 1.4, with distance info for ETTL-II.

I'd love to see the 70-200 f/4 IS... but that also means that I would have to sell my JUST recently acquired 70-200 f/4 non-IS.. LOL.. DOH'

If we could have 2 votes:

30D/35D and the 70-200 f/4 IS

I voted for the 200 1.8 mkII L 'cause I hope someone from Canon is lurking on this forum and I want one.

I'm renting the mkI version of this lens in a couple of months as I want to hold off on purchasing one in hopes of a mkII.

Is there a way to vote twice so I can stack the deck?
