Interesting. I didn't realize CZ had used the Ultron branding. The samples on Flickr remind me a great deal of the Rodenstock Heligon 50/1.9. Should be a fun lens.

Decided against the Biogon 35 (very happy I rented). I think I've finally got it through my head there is no smaller, cheaper replacement for the Distagon (for now).

Instead I bought a used Tamron 150-600 G2.

Yeah, I tried it out and it looked pretty sharp. Not much talk about it but I think it's a worthwhile purchase, especially for the small dollars they are going for right now.

Zeiss owned Voigtlaender for a spell in the '70s, so it makes sense.

I just noticed something interesting embossed on the back side of the "Zeiss style bayonet filter" B50 (skylight) filter that came with my Zeiss Ultron 50/1.8 M42. It says,

"ZEISS IKON VOIGTLANDER", and "WEST GERMANY o50", where "o" is actually the Greek letter "phi", which denotes 'diameter', and "A" in "VOIGTLANDER" has an umlaut (i.e. double-dots on top), see photos.

The filter glass is very thin (but strong), and the front of the filter has the same B50 mount as the front of the lens (exept the filter ring is plastic).

The original rubber hood also has "ZEISS IKON VOIGTLANDER", "WEST GERMANY”, and “o56” embossed on it, but the (in this case) three phrases are equidistant on the circumference. The hood mount is unusual, as it screws onto the knurly ring at the front, outside end of the lens barrel. Really, this is threads on the outside of the lens barrel, but it’s cleverly “knobbied” with cross-cuts, so that it looks like a grippy surface for rotating something (which it is not; it is threads).

Here's some links with more info on the lens and etc.

P.S. a generic 52mm centre-pinch lens cap fits just right, on the front of the Ultron.

Anyone know much about this Canon rangefinder 50/1.2?

Awesome lens, I have one, it's probably the smallest 50/1.2 out there.
It's sharp wide open, not as dreamy as other f1.2 normals, I'll be taking it to AZ this winter, so I will hopefully have something to post.
The 50/0.95 Dream lens is as dreamy as they come, and costs 4-8x as much.
I only have one test shot uploaded

Contax Zeiss Sonnar 180mm 2.8.
Seems to be a fine lens.
Little Loca but easy to delete.

Until Fred puts up a Pentax forum (don't hold your breath), using a Sigma lens on a Pentax camera is definitely Alt. I'd use the Canon forum to talk about using this lens on a Canon body, but Alt is the right place for this combo.

Fingers crossed for the 3rd copy ... I tried 2 and both had significant CA and were not terribly sharp.

Meh. That's what I was hoping, for this one. Turns out, it's not as sharp as I remember the last one being.

Last time I sold one, it was because I wanted the best light-weight telephoto for handheld shooting. The EF 70-200/4L IS provided consistently better results, because of the IS. The CV 180 I then owned was noticeably sharper on a tripod, but not handheld. Now, with the current CV 180 on a 50 MP 5DS camera, the CV prime is not as good as my EF 70-200/4L IS, both on tripod this time. Maybe it's copy variation (this little puppy is in mint condition) or maybe it's the more demanding 50 MP sensor. I don't know.

It might be worth mentioning that my TS-E 24/3.5 L II shows better resolution on the 5DS, but the Zeiss Distagon 25/2 ZE shows better resolution on the 6D. One more goes in the for-sale bin.

Have you considered one of the Leica R 180 lenses? I think they have a better reputation for sharpness. Most like the lower price of teh 180/3.4 apo tho I like very much the 180/2.8 apo, albeit at a higher cost.

Yes. I owned two Leica Apo-Telyt-R 180/3.4 E60 lenses. IQ-wise weren't any better than the first two CV 180 (esp. at closer distances). I sold one of them too, in the "light-weight telephoto for handheld shooting" selection process. Besides, I have many excellent options at 200mm, just that most of them are way larger than the CV 180.

The 180/2.8 apo is better at close distances than the 180/3.4.
