p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D200 vs D7000....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you own both or used to own a D200 and moved to the D7000, how do you compare the two cameras? Due to an injury, I really want less weight in my next camera. I will keep the D200 but would find it hard to use it and the D300's replacement and I like to use 2 bodies. I think the D7000 and the 12/24 and my 80-200 on the D200 might work well for me.

Is the D7000 filling the need for you?

I've used a D200 and D90 and prefer the D90 much more than the D200 except I like the larger size and build quality of the D200. The D7000 will have a slightly better body though and better controls and quality images than the D90 so it's just that much better. If you're looking lighter, the D7000 is an obvious choice. I'd say choose it confidently.

I have a D200 and have had the opportunity to use a D7000 and there is an obvious difference in the weight. But weight has never been and issue with me. I actually prefer the feel of the D200. It just feels more substantial and it kind of makes the D7000 feel a little cheaper by comparison. Amazingly, after I took a few photos with the D7000, I completely forgot about how it felt and just fell in love with the photos. Besides, the D7000 is not a cheaply built camera at all. I have my own on order from Adorama. It has an improved focus system compared to the D200. Obviously more resolution. Greater dynamic range. Greatly improved battery life. 2 card slots (I am not thrilled with the smaller SDHC cards honestly). Significantly better LCD. ETC. And it has video capabilities if you are interested. It is certainly a worthwhile upgrade for D200 users, IMO.

I own a D7000 and it's like the D700 was taken and compacted down, or perhaps a D300. It's a leaner version of the same body type, which is made out of magnesium alloy in each case.

Filling the need for a DX camera? Oh yeah, and then some. It's a remarkable camera. I went from a D200 to a D700 18 months ago (still have both). 12/30 I took delivery of a D7000. I'm still getting used to it, but the IQ difference compared to a D200 is night and day for anything other than good light, and even then it's noticeably better in DR, color, and tonal transition. The sensor improvement is remarkable, and vindicates my choice to skip the D300/300s. I like to shoot in low light, and the D7k gets it done MUCH better. Less menu-diving, too. The other newer features make it well worth having.

I don't care one whit about video - it's a non-issue for me, but it's there. I'm fine with two SD cards, although I'd rather carry just one kind if I take two bodies with me, so I put two 32gb cards in it. Set to cascade cards, the camera reckons I'll get 1804 shots of 14-bit lossless compressed RAW. The only thing I miss about the D200 is the more extensive auto-exposure bracketing. Everything else, well, just get one. That's my $.02. YMMV.

The D200 normally has parity at low ISOs vs. almost anything, partly because it can dip to ISO 100 natively. The D7000 matches that and looks beautiful at ISO 100. I had been sort of wishing I had a D200 just for that low ISO ability, but now I don't anymore just because the D7000 provides basically the same thing.

Want a lighter setup than a D200 with a standard lens you best option is one of the 4/3 cameras. They still have a sensor that is 6x the size of the ones of a P&S camera and decent ISO 1600 performance and the weight will be half that of the D7000 or any other DSLR with a standard zoom like the Nikon 16-85mm lens.

I tried the smaller lighter D3100.
Even before my D7000 arrived, I returned it.
It was too light for me to hold steady.

Own both, put 120k clicks through the D200. Still runs like the day I bought it new back in '07. Upgraded to the D7000. It feels much better than the D90, slightly larger than that body too. A little smaller than the D200, certainly lighter, but it's a beast of a camera. I shoot a lot of night gigs, concerts, etc, and my D7000 just about lives between ISO 2000 - 3200 (sometimes up to 6400). It just rocks. The mini D700 that could.

My only complaints are that it's SD card compartment door opens too easily, the buffer fills up too quickly when shooting RAW (which I always do) and the bracketing isn't as good as the D200's. Otherwise it's superior.

Enjoy!
