Filling the need for a DX camera? Oh yeah, and then some. It's a remarkable camera. I went from a D200 to a D700 18 months ago (still have both). 12/30 I took delivery of a D7000. I'm still getting used to it, but the IQ difference compared to a D200 is night and day for anything other than good light, and even then it's noticeably better in DR, color, and tonal transition. The sensor improvement is remarkable, and vindicates my choice to skip the D300/300s. I like to shoot in low light, and the D7k gets it done MUCH better. Less menu-diving, too. The other newer features make it well worth having.
I don't care one whit about video - it's a non-issue for me, but it's there. I'm fine with two SD cards, although I'd rather carry just one kind if I take two bodies with me, so I put two 32gb cards in it. Set to cascade cards, the camera reckons I'll get 1804 shots of 14-bit lossless compressed RAW. The only thing I miss about the D200 is the more extensive auto-exposure bracketing. Everything else, well, just get one. That's my $.02. YMMV.
