p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 200-500 & Canon 100-400

Here are a few quick comparison shots with the Canon 100-400.
7D mounted on tripod, mirror lock-up, self-timer shutter release, all at exactly same distance, manual focus, from jpegs (with in-camera sharpening the same for all images).

If you want a better or more accurate test, you will have to ask someone else to do it. This was just for my curiosity.

Huh. Tamron doesn't look half bad to me. How's it look at the shorter end?

**EDIT**
Just read your review. I take it you never got the focusing mechanism fixed and use it strictly as MF?

You are assuming this is the same lens, which it is not. I had the other one repaired (not under warranty) for about $300, then sold it.

My comments on the new one are pretty well the same. The only advantages the Tamron has over the Canon are: cheaper, lighter, and 100mm more reach.

Tamron AF sucks compared to the Canon and lack of focus-limiter is stupid.

Plus, the Canon IS probably comes in handy when you forget to use a tripod.

For the price the tamron is a good lens
I would go for it just for the lack of stabilization

If I shot in sunny conditions it would be an option of upgrade for my 70-300 IS

Indeed, I made the mistake of assuming. I forgot how quickly many seem to rotate their stock of gears here. Yes, gears.
