Oh Glen, I am so very sorry for the loss of both your mother and father. I know firsthand that this can be a very emotional time, especially when losing someone who is so close to you. You are wise to reach out to your "extended family" here as like many others here... I too feel the very same way about all of you!

My father was 89 and mother 90 when they both passed in the last two years. The grief you feel from not being able to hug them, or to see their smile, or hear their laugh can weigh heavily on you at times. But also knowing that they no longer have to live in pain and suffering helps ease that feeling of grief too.

Some of the things that helped me was knowing ( or should I say that my Christian belief is ) that they are now reunited together forever, happy and pain free. I also believe that they continue to live in our hearts forever... I truly feel their presence often and that warms my heart. In fact, Rosie paid me an unexpected visit just yesterday... I've been home sick with a bad bronchitis infection and out of the blue, I came across a thank you note that was written by her from a few years ago, to me, thanking me for all the kind things that I had done for her and Dutch over the years and simply expressing her deep love for me and that they will always be here for me. I hadn't seen that note for years and had forgotten all about it, yet it appeared yesterday out of the blue, right when I needed to feel their love and presence the most. I truly believe that they can see us and hear us and be with us and therefore still be a part of our lives.

The other thing that helped me through the tough times was having all of you here. Seeing your wonderful images, hearing about everyone's life's moments of love, children/grandchildren being born, moving to new homes or starting new careers, new camera/lens acquisitions, travels and celebrations! This forum is so much more than photographs, but rather it is all of us sharing in each other's lives.... both the good times as well as the bad times.

So it is my wish to you and your family, that the Lord be with you and bless you. That He comforts you and takes care of you. And that He allows you to feel the presence of both your mother's and father's love, live in your heart now and forever more!

Best wishes,
Don

Hi everyone, and Happy New Year to you all!

I have had a very busy time lately due to my mother being hospitalized for just short of three weeks over the Christmas period, followed by her passing away over this past weekend. She had developed a rapidly advancing condition of dementia in 2010 and had been living in long-term care for the past 5 or 6 years. Her dementia had advanced to the point where she was completely immobilized except for facial expression and some head movement, and she had been unable to talk for most of those 5-6 years. Thus

Glen, so very sorry to hear of your loss. My parents both passed early, but we have spent the past 4 years dealing both with the process and aftermath of my husband's parents loss due to dementia and cancer. I do so admire and appreciate all the support you are receiving here on the forum. We are indeed family, and our thoughts and hearts are with you.

Glen, you have my condolences as well. I agree with your sentiments on our little group of travelers here. I think of you all as extended family. Enough so that my wife recognizes many of your names in conversation.

One of the reasons I have not been around much is my father is quickly succumbing to leukemia. He was diagnosed with extremely advanced leukemia late October. He is exhausted all the normal chemo options and has taken some experimental treatment without any positive results. I was told today that he is to sick for another study drug... Although nobody is

Glen, condolences to you and your family.

I have an uncle who has been in that kind of state for far too long now. He was easily the smartest person I knew up close. It is very difficult to look at the same person with no expression, recognition or response. Alzheimer's is an awful scourge.

I tried out the 24mm NC on my D80 IR camera today.
I am pleased to report that I can add this lens to my list of optics that works really well in infrared. No apparent hot spotting.

My thoughts are with you Glen and Kevin

It was the 15th anniversary of my dad's passing recently, had he still been alive he still would have been only 75. I was 34 at the time. It was one of the primary reasons for emigrating to Australia - life's too short etc.

Some of you may be familiar with the farm that I look after when the owners are away ? He died suddenly of heart failure last Saturday also aged just 60.

I was hoping to have some shots with the 85/1.8 H that I acquired from Glen, but the weather has not been co-operating. After the ice storm cleared out we got hit with snow last night—about 13 inches in my backyard this morning. More snow today, but not nearly as much.

Here are a couple of images from last month. The first cliché shot is with the new to me 85/1.8 H at f/4 taken in a park a few blocks from my house.

The clamshell was shot with the 105/4 at f/16 on D700.

BTW, how does one get additional text to appear in a post after the images? And how does one get the images aligned with the left margin, not centered?

Which version of the 55? I need a clean front element for mine.

So, the return label for the 10mm 5.6 OP has been received, it will go back tomorrow, I will make a final offer just to keep it as a decent condition rare collectible but it will likely not get accepted. My price elasticity is highly dependent on condition and optics.

A unfair comparison of a somewhat defective 10mm 5.6 OP with a perfect 8mm 2.8 ais.

Compare the perspective/angular rendition difference. Also the 10mm has a 20mm image circle vs 23mm for the 8mm. Nothing scientific, different days, different light.

Sorry to hear about the defects on the lens.

In the last two images the difference in rendering becomes very obvious. The 10mm renders Corvettes as small family vans

Hi Glen, my condolences to you and your family.

I lost my mother in 2011 two days shy of her 87th birthday and she too had been in a specialised unit for about 5 years. She fell and broke her hip the day before we left for the US, had a hip replacement which was successful but then contracted pneumonia. She did have a living will and her doctor after consultation made the decision to ensure that she was kept comfortable. Thankfully she died peacefully and hopefully rejoined her beloved husband who had passed on 25 years earlier. Her passing was a blessed relief as she no longer had to live with drugs and in a fearful and totally confused state.

At 72 I sometimes wonder if all the medication we take to prolong our lives beyond the allotted "three score years and ten" is worth the effort and if the deaths we see regularly from horrible cancers and illnesses such as dementia aren't a message to let nature take its course.

Be strong.

Peter

Thanks everyone for your supportive thoughts and shared experiences (and Reagan for your photographic eloquence). I even received a couple of very nice PM's from thread members. This is all very meaningful and helpful, and just one more reason that I appreciate this wonderful community of photographers.

Kevin, I wish you all the best in your challenging situation; if it's like mine has been, the responsibilities are demanding, but the emotional burden is far greater. It sounds as though your losses are happening all at once, instead of being spread over years like mine have been, which perhaps makes them even more intense for you. I hope your photography and your participation in these forums will help to balance the load, as they have done for me.
