As to the hood, there is an old timer here that shoots a rubber hood on his 300mm 2.8Af-S. I admired it and found out it was a black rubber plumbing connector that was available from a home improvement store. It had the same dimensions and better protection than the $300 CF carbon fiber hood that came with the lens and cost $6 US.

I need to get me one of these. Probably have to go to the commercial plumbing section to find one large enough for the 600mm (177mm, I think, or 7").

I recall breaking a hood on the Canon 600 in the 90s and it was $340 already back then, not even carbon, just really brittle aluminum. That was about the time aftermarket carbon hoods appeared on the market. I never located anyone selling them back then, and even today it's surprising that there aren't more options, given the ridiculous pricing by Nikon and Canon for replacements. The 800mm f/5.6 hood costs over $1000 at B&H, while my hiking carbon bear canister, technically far more complex and way larger, only costs $275, which probably includes a hefty margin.

They are a sleek looking thing of beauty. I saw a used one once at the Range Rover dealer and could not get into it. Aren't they only a meter tall?

Ken - that plumber piece is a piece of beauty! But I have the hood .... just wondering if anything exists that can be used as a cap instead of the leather pouch.

I will seek the "Hoppe's No.9" ... my 200/4QC would enjoy a good cleaning :-)

Df to arrive by Thursday. Also to arrive is a 24mm f2.8 AI

took a morning stoll from our cabin in Big Bear Lake with the D300 and 135mm f2.8 AIS

Funny how our cabin is on Highland RD and the cross street is Hammond.

I use a LensCoat Neoprene "hoodie" on my 600mm - they come in all sizes. Not as cheap as the plumber's rubber piece, but reasonable. I made the actual leans covering myself out of Neoprene, but the hood is a little too complex to bother with.

The lens, assuming I get it, comes with a nikon soft front cover for it. I could always leave the hs-4 mounted and then it should be very safe (but huge also when not used or in the bag).
Any suggestion for a lens strap? Can I use a normal nikon camera strap or one that screws in tripod foot?

I can't catch up with this fast moving thread so I apologize if I can't address each person individually. I just want to say THANK YOU for looking and liking my images

I went on a bike ride yesterday afternoon... started around 7pm while the sun was still up and rode until it was pitch dark! I took my Df and 28 2.8 AIS for some night shooting. The Df is a fantastic low light machine and feels so right with MF Nikkor glass!

(EDIT: The first two were also shot with 28 2.8 AIS, I forgot to change my lens # on the Non-CPU menu)

The start of my ride.. with a Df on hand!

  NIKON Df    105mm    f/8.0    1/500s    900 ISO    0.0 EV

Shipwrecked

  NIKON Df    105mm    f/11.0    1/500s    800 ISO    0.0 EV

Trying out long exposure with the Df

  NIKON Df    28mm    f/11.0    20s    50 ISO    0.0 EV

Pitch dark? No tripod? no problem with the Df :)

  NIKON Df    28mm    f/5.6    1/30s    51200 ISO    0.0 EV

f/8 1/400s ISO 400

Those shots are tremendous! Especially handheld I'm thinking about gettting the TC-16a and the 600/4. Still waiting on my d600 body. Have the 300/2.8 ais and can't wait to try it out with semi AF.

I'd call B&H when they are open, and ask them, as the Nikon 39mm filters have the threads on the outside, not the inside. I've got two lenses that use them but I've not experimented.

Thank you for the reply! That's what I've been coming up with. Was hoping I wouldn't have to call, but I think I'll need to. I thought it would be more common since the 300/4 and 300/2.8 use the same drop-in filter.

Peter, More great racing shots! Awesome to see you get some good ones that close, and looks like the 600 really shined as well.

Paul, Some really awesome shots! I think I like the hay one the best.

Andy, Loving your captures from across the pond. The t-rex captures are my fav.

John, That would be me after hiking up that trail way to capture the moment!

James, love the chipmunk, such cute little creatures. Nice capture of the old truck!

Ronny, Those rays are EPIC! love the color and atmosphere in the ocean shot, then you top it off with that amazing lighthouse! You are changing my mind ont he 28 2.8 not being good at distance.

Rafael, looks like you picked the right time to capture those buildings! Has some really nice colors on that quaint town.

Samy, very nice texture and dof on those trees

David, I love how that red light draws your eyes towards the GM building

Ken, There is a hotel right down the street (in SF there is a hotel down every street). I captured it on Friday morning. My best guess is they just got into town and their hotel room was not ready, so they decided to get some breakfast and wait. That diner is VERY small and crammed so I am sure it wasn't fun bringing them in there. Also glad to see you are enjoying the Df and seeing your captures with it!

Ray, all I can say is... WOW!

Steve, that Mercedes is very nice. I am a huge benz fan! Also glad to see one of my favorite lenses getting put to good use!

Ric, Congrats on the purchases. I know you will love that Df and quite the upgrade from the d300! Nice shots of big bear I love that area, of course Tahoe wins for us NorCal folk.

Joseph, Nice grabs while riding around. Love the shadow pic.

First shot with the 135mm f2.8 QC wide open. Sent it to John White last Monday and got it back today. He really does nice work and fast!
