Andy... what a great portrait of you! How old is your son? He handled that MF lens awfully well. It seems photography is in the genes of the MacDougal clan. As an aside, I spent a month in Scotland many years ago and I count it as one of my favorite locales. I'm also a bit of fan of single malt, though the best whiskies are out of my price range at this point in my life. But nothing is finer than a 16 year old Lagavulin... Of course, you don't mention Scotland so perhaps your roots are found elsewhere.

One of these days you're going to have to talk us through your workflow on these beautiful, moody images. Excellent work all the way around.

My youngest is 16 and enjoyed having a go while were in Turkey, my daughter is 18 and has a D7000, my eldest is 18 and he and his girlfriend have a Canon dslr of some variety.

As for my roots, I'm an Anglo-scot, my dad's side of the family centred around Dundee on the East Coast but he came down to Liverpool aged 16 to join the Merchant Navy and met my mother there.
Our clan is one of the original 6 old clans of Scotland, the head of the clan was The Lord of the Isles (the western isles) around 1200 AD. Our clan motto translates to "Victory or Death !"
We had a skirmish with Robert the Bruce once (we also had claim to the throne of Scotland at that time, a more legitimate claim than Bruce apparently) and stole his jewelled brooch which we still have in our possession called The Brooch of Lorn.

Did you visit the West coast ? it is stunningly beautiful. I last holidayed there when I met my wife and we spent 2 weeks camping our way up the coast, Oban, Skye etc. - our small tent pitched yards from the pristine white sandy beaches, views of the mountains / lochs from the door.

My intention was to attend graduate school in Edinburgh, expecting to be there for a year. We bought a car and before school was to start took a one month tour down the east coast of England, across the south coast before heading north, eventually passing Glasgow on our way to the west coast. with a stop in Skye. We went as far north as we could before traveling down through the Highlands before returning to Edinburgh. Here is a photo of me with our Citreon Dyane...

This was shot with a Nikkormat but the lens was certainly a Soligor...

I was surprised by the tropical feel of the west coast, as well as the dramatic skies. The Scottish people were a delight. Since I was a history major in undergraduate school I read extensively on Scottish history before the trip. What you mention definitely rings a bell. I also wouldn't be surprised if my Norwegian ancestors made their presence known in Scotland during its bloody history. I've no doubt that my mother's black hair, brown eyes and olive complexion were due to a raiding party in Portugal or Spain. Family histories are fascinating.

Sounds as though you had a busy time creating your own family. My hat is off to you.

Great candid image Paul, but that Canon 5D3 is not allowed by the initial rules of this thread.
Do you post over in the Alt forum?

Hi. I shall do that. A while back I had looked at the rules, but honestly forgot. But with so few 24mm f2 images...

If you want me to delete I will happily do so.

Thanks.

The Gulf Stream runs up the west coast making it milder than the east coast, they even have palm trees in the Isle of Man an Torquay.

That was the feel of the place. My first trip to Europe was two months spent in Greece and the water and vegetation along the west coast definitely had the feel of the Mediterranean, sort of aqua color to the water and foliage that seemed out of place.

Awesome photo... perfect in black and white. I recall the Tattoo, but perhaps more surprising was walking down the street the day we arrived and seeing fog running through a distant intersection. I had no idea what it was at the moment. Now, of course, I've become quite familiar with fog in all its many manifestations. I love Edinburgh. I still have a wool throw bought on that trip. My Pringle sweaters are long gone...

I'm passing the thread along to folks to my east. I'm off for a good nights rest. I want to stop by in the morning to say hi to Leighton and the rest of the East coast contingent who have been so important to the life of this thread. Night all!

Thanks Philippe.

Your image "JP II hot-line" has to be one of your best. It has everything going for it. Light, perspective, composition and subject. I love it when these all come together as this one did, well done my friend!
