Fascinating Scott. As I reflect on it I realized I always set the non-CPU register at 50 f/4 when shooting with that lens. I certainly never had problems with metering, so I guess i was just lucky... With what Ray reported earlier, perhaps we have an explanation... considering that the aperture opening actually changes size when the zoom ring is turned. It is hard to imagine the camera is smart enough to recognize this particular lens even with the information in the register, but perhaps the difference in aperture size is what affects the outcome at the two different focal lengths. The camera expects f/4 but is actually dealing with different aperture size. Definitely a curiosity.

Great info on the 25-50/4. Better to left at 50/4 on the non CPU menu. I will check my copy tomorrow to confirm this behaviour.

Nice sharp images Jose. I had tried a TC-16 which was modified to use on all motor drive DSLRs. However it had major back focusing issues that I had to return it back.

But love my 400mm just by itself so much that I am ready to crop.

Nice to see some photos from a great old lens like the 400mm 3.5. Post more when you can.

Crusing Grand, was Pierce Arrow day. Took the 135mm 2.0, very hard to work with all the people milling around.

The cars are just magnificent.

There were some Packards too, this at 2.0 with the 135mm. How come cars do not come in these colors anymore?

Rafael, I really like those old cars and when using manual focus glass it seems they shine even brighter. Your post processing will certainly add to that (wish to share the secret?)

I will be joining the FX ranks soon. I wanted to wait a bit with the purchase but a perfect opertunity came along and I purchased a used but very nice D3 (straight swap for my AF-S 14-24 f2,8 which feels redundant now that I own the much prettier looking and smaller 20mm UD Nikkor).

A few things have me wondering. One of which, and maybe the most pressing right now, is do the focus screens for the D700 fit in a D3 too? I do wish to swap in a split prism screen just like I have in the D300

Jose, more nice work with the "obsolete" combo. Looking forward to your test results on the 25-50.

Ram, nice tele crop with the 400 3.5.

Rafael, great car series. The Pierce Arrow hood ornament is terrific.

Its a sleeper beauty in the world of f2.8s. Taken using the 400mm f3.5 AI., 50% crop.

Those are mighty sharp images Ram. The only lens that sharp in my collection must be the 105mm micro Nikkor.

Really nice that last one Ram! Love the detail on the bird and the background. How heavy is that lens?

Thanks Guys. This is shot at f5.6 which is where the optimum sharpness begins. F8 is spectacular and F11 is too.
The lens is around 6 lbs. You can read about it here.
400mm f3.5

I could still use f4 if there is no cropping involved and if its a landscape styled photo.

How does the 400/3.5 compare to the 400/5.6 though?

I have a 300/4 AFS which with the TC17EII becomes a 500mm and I am very satisfied with it so its more for curiosity than any other thing.

Ram very sharp indeed

Laura pre focus serves me well as in the past skateboarders and the few taken earlier today of the golfer in full swing. Very nice series but no way in the "same league" as the Lakeland "Flying Tigers."

Nuno very good beach setting and shots.

Ray me salivate over a Vette .... yeah you bet!

Scott love the series and the block buildings

Steve the birds are very well done and natural

Chin ... how did you do that?

Phillippe some things like old men staring are universal

Kevin et al I think I'll try my 25-50 with the new info.

Curtis ... went to the car dealer yesterday and hung out. Learned I an lease a NEW Corvette C7 CHEAPER than I can lease a Power Chair to get around in. It's been six weeks yesterday. To my surprise a good friend dropped off a Power Chair that was used by his family. It has a 25 mile range does 5 MPH and can turn on a dime. Using it keeps my left shoulder from blowing out that will be needed once I can put weight on my legs.

Well I took the chair down the road today and took the 180 ED. Got some good shots and shot a flower and a kitten as well as momma cat based on the inspiration I get from this thread.

Congrats on the D3 Buddy, I just use Capture NX2 with the Nik Plug in, obsolete software, these were processed with either old photo, or solarization, plus color and contrast tweaks.
