For Cadman and others, I have a question about street shooting random people.

I never do it because I do not like it when it is done using me as a subject.

Do people not get upset when an unknown photographer points a camera at them and is obviously photographing them? Do the subjects get creeped out (a lot seem to be young and female)? Do you ever have incidents where the subjects object? Or even object strongly.

When it happens to me, which fortunately isn't too often due to my size, the way I look and the fact that I

I have only recently begun attempting street photography but so far no one has said anything. I do get "the stare" which is a bit unnerving but am learning to just ignore it I wouldn't mind at all if people did give me "the Webex Salute" either. If someone did approach me and ask me to delete the photo I would of course.

Incidentally, one of the couples in this series of pics was identified by a friend of a friend of a friend on my FB page but they seemed almost pleased and not at all bothered when they saw I had taken their pic.

I should add that, to my knowledge, no one has ever taken a pic of me in the street. I don't think it would bother me if they did tbh but I would probably give them "the stare"

What I would really like to do is shoot street portraits but I haven't got up the courage yet to stop random strangers in the street and ask them. The man made lagoon here has lots of backpackers in peak season in a state of undress but I don't intend to go take pictures of them, just people walking the streets.

Proof that our plan of planting native trees and shrubs to attract birds and butterflies is the right one (although this gum tree was planted by us soon after we moved in nearly 7 years ago before we formulated that plan). We now have lots of bottlebrushes, grevilleas and vines/climbers - have had Ulysses (80mm wingspan) and Cairns Birdwing (100mm wingspan) butterflies visiting in the last week too.
Interestingly, the Rainbow Lorikeets pictured here usually fly off when they see me but today the pull of all that nectar goodness was the only thing on their mind. They have a special purpose bristly tongue that enables them to lap it up.
Manual focus again with D800E and 180mm/f2.8 AI-s lens. Huge crop ! MFing them 20ft up in the tree was bloody hard but got a surprising number in focus. I think this may have been at f5.6.

In light of my above reply to Gregg I've titled this - "Oi ! Who said you could take my picture ?"

On the contrary I would say you perfectly normal and very much in the majority - no-one likes having their pic taken but I guess it depends on a number of factors how they react, eg their mood, their personality, if they're in a rush, how big the guy is who is taking their picture, the lifestyle of the place (Cairns is a tourist town, lots of backpackers, laid back tropical place) etc etc.

Do you look like this ? (missed the focus I know) Even he didn't say/do anything (fortunately!) , just gave me "the stare"

but then again, I look a bit like this myself

Laura - Thanks for the compliment and the idea to post it to the other thread which is filled with fast planes and cars.
Scott - I like the gambrel roof barns and the way you captured them You don't see great outbuildings like that down here.
Larry - I like the bokeh with the hint of a 767 in the background.
Rafael - Always super shots from great cars to San Juan Mission. More from the 15mm anytime please!
Andy - What a bunch of great photos from people to parrots. We have a tourist season here too! Trouble is it's year round
Mihai - Very nice series over the past couple of days. If I bought the "villa" I would be locked in the tower with my lenses!
Ray - What can I say those sun glasses accent that "pondering" look. The jacket, DILLIGAF and AR15 say its a "Polk County Boy" captured perfectly.
Kevin - The colors of the tulip shot really work well together
Lester - Great perspective on the war monuments I really like the very last one for its speaks of an era that you captured perfectly.

The FoF Museum has a couple of hangars devoted to projects. No shiny stuff but the best place to bring a camera as there are no tourists milling around .. walking in and out of your shot!

Following Ken I used the 28-45 4.5 this afternoon for a couple of shots. Light was too bright for bigger subjects but these two worked OK.

From memory the sweet spot is f8 but I tried a couple of extremes to see the result. Considering I was shooting into the light without a hood the flare is not too bad.

Thanks much for the comments.

Georg, I was also fascinated by the "sunstars" from the 50/1.2 at f2. At first, I thought it might have been due to some local contrast in SEP, but they were very apparent in the RAW image as well.

Ken, very nice "Spirit" and biplane shots.

Mihai, very interesting villa. The b&w version seems to de-emphasize the more modern touches in the photograph (the signs and bin on the pole) and, for that reason, I prefer it. Love the look of the old casino shot.

Scott, I like both snowy barn shots. The texture of the barn in the second shot, and the tree shadows and snow drift in the foreground, make it pretty special, IMO.

Larry, very nice image of the children's statue.

Rafael, beautiful shots from SJC. Agree with you about the 105.

Andy, nice street shooting and great bird.

Ray, nice work with the 55/1.2. Really like the colors and background in the Fender Tele shot.

Kevin, very cool door and flowers.

Lestor, very interesting and well-done shots of the memorial.

Peter, very nice flowers.

So many pages and so many great pictures .....

The like button is getting a heavy use again !!!!!

So little time and so many pix to comment on .....

On Friday I was heading for the train home ...

Commuting is such a joy ....

But on arriving at the station The Valentines Pullman train was sitting there ....

An evening of fine dining and perhaps romance at 455 per person .... approx $725 each .... for an evening trip !!!!

Anyway the only lens I had with me was 'the Leighton' ...... oh yes ... the ubiquitous 50-135mm

So it was dark hence the ISO @1600 no flash ... hand held at 50mm range

1/10th for some and up to 1/30th @ f5.6

Just look at that place setting and the seating ... luxury .... at a price ... but worth it if you're with the loved one !!!

Thanks for the compliments guys. It is nice to be back. I looked at the thread on my iPhone and noticed my colors are off. I think my monitor I edit on is a little wonky. Will fix that today.

The flare on the 28/3.5 HC is interesting. The lens is a 5 bladed aperture and at f/8 it really shows. A lens hood wouldn't have helped this shot. I was shooting straight into the sun that was peaking over the door about 3 feet up. I took another shot where I stepped back some and you could count the different colored flares and know how many elements were in the lens.

Just because everyone else is showing off with their 55mm f1.2 ....

I thought I would set mine up on a PK-13

Sweet subject !!!!!

The sugar bowl was looking inviting for a shot up close of the crystals .....

Anyway .... set up ... ISO200 2x SB-900 + SU-800 to drive them.

f16 on the 55mm f 1.2

Kevin welcome back to the land of the living

Chuong the lens is wonderfully sharp. It rarely needs sharpening in lightroom. Thanks for selling it to me

Mahai thanks for the compliment. He is an interesting person I love your work using the 45mm. The fog really adds to your photo!

Andy I think you are right about Reagan. Thanks. You are capturing so great candids on the streets. My kinda stuff!!! Your parakeet is so sharp it almost looks stuffed. WOW

Thanks Buddy. We have an eclectic crowd. we have folks from all walks of life. Mostly though we are just old hippies

Thanks Leighton. The 55mm 1.2 has a natural vignette when used wide open outside. But it wasn't enough to make the photo look correct. It looked worse when I eliminated it all together so I added a little more and i was much happier

Thank you Reagan

Lester great architecture photos but the couple on the bench is extraordinary!

Ken what a great angle on your plane photo - well done!

Peter you are an inspiration to me. Everyday you have something great to share

Steve that looks like a train I wouldn't mind riding on!
