Great news Ray! I noticed a different sound to the shutter when they replaced mine as well.

Thank you Chuong and Leighton. I guess I will have to dig an AF lens out of the closet to try that out as well

Be careful Ray, its a short trip from shooting AF to finding yourself using "live view" in P mode!

Good news Ray, should add to the speed at which this thread moves Neat bad hair day image Leighton, very striking image! And Steve, that's quite a monument. Labor laws and justice back then were a bit different I guess.

Here's a very quick, unscientific test of the 55 1.2 S vs. the 50 1.2 AIS. Not sure if this controlled, limited setup will show the differences some of us talk about.

55 first, then the 50 at each aperture setting.

55 vs. 50 at f/1.2

No tripod, just tried to line up my elbow placed on the counter at exactly the same point.

Samy, thanks for the effort! Nice comparison, without caption I would have had a hard time to tell which is which lens (apart from the slightly more narrow field of view of the 55).

Keep the colors coming Georg, they are great! Little 3D pop coming out of that 400mm... "Color" me impressed.

Georg, good demo of your new 400 3.5 tele.

Ed and Leighton, hope this was the last of the 2014 winter snow.

Giag from Austin, the 400 5.6 is a wonderful light telephoto. Very sharp and handholdable, great for walk around birding if you are into such a thing.

Rafael, sad to see the Calumet stores close down. Ritz around here shut down shop in recent times.

Jeff, wonderful images from the Sierras!

Chuong, great shot of the little ones peeking in on the lion.

Jay, I like the second amendment image and the colors. Reminds me of the time I was at the gun show in Maryland last year.

Fons, what a bright color in that tree! Well done with that intense color.

Peter (Knysna), pretty view outside the cafe with the 5cm f2. And your cherry jam photo reminds me of a trip to northern Michigan. Lots of cherry products there.

Ed, like the CSX engine, and that last photo of the colorful leaves with the 105 2.5. What agreat lens that Nikon's made in different versions through the decades.

Ram, mouth watering Nikkor lineup, very well taken photo!

Don't know if I will ever catch up to the 10 or so pages I missed.

Georg, I can make out some slight differences, the 55 seems to have a slight more "character". Maybe other setups are needed to bring out the comparison better. Or maybe I am biased, I just like the looks of the old scalloped rings better on the 55 1.2 S

Ray, congrats to your shiny "new" D600! Hope we see some fresh shots with it soon ;-)

Steve, really interesting set from the Preston-workers memorial. This style of memorials is pretty common over here too. Great selfie with your F2!

Leighton, the "Bad Hair Day" is fantastic. I'm just afraid I could get hypnotized by looking all too long at this fine shot

Jay, the strange vehicle looks cool in it's "back to the basics" nakedness. To be honest: I don't like the softening of the background - no offense meant as usual.

Ed, very moody looking snow-city-image. The good thing about a long hard winter is that we all enjoy spring much more than after a "warm" winter.

Kevin, very nice portrait of your wife. I prefer the B&W-version. Great job to tame the noise.

Jeff, your mountain-shots are superb. Love how the outline of the front-mountains are echoing the outlines of the far mountains on #1.
The trees on the second picture are great as a scale and emphasize the massiveness of the mountains behind. Sorry, wish I had better words for it.

Rafael, the blossom is wonderfully captured. Sorry to read about US-Calumet, they will continue their business over here.

Thanks for the kind words and "likes" on my latest efforts, really much appreciated!

Thanks, Kevin! The shots above were processed in AdobeCameraRaw without any tricks, followed by a moderate "ProContrast"-cure in "ColorEfexPro".
Here's a shot processed with a Kodak Ultramax-preset in ACR, no other PP except downsizing and saving for web:

Pferd in Kodak-Farben aus dem www von georgsfoto auf Flickr
I like the soft rendering/tones of the background, but the horse seems to be a bit hot in terms of saturation.

The 50 vs 55 1.2 conundrum is easy to sort out
Which ever one you get the best deal on is the one you should get

It is like choosing a 21 year old blonde or a 22 year old brunette
Just take whichever one that comes along first
You will be happy with either

Georg, if I could get colors like that straight out of the camera, I would enjoy photography so much more. I have to process nearly every shot to get the color right.

For a moment I thought I'd come upon the wrong thread... Georg... COLOR? I thought you converted all photos to black and white because there WAS no color in your corner of the world. But obviously, that is not the case. I like them all but the last one is really sweet. Makes me wish that Rinie still hung around the thread. She is a big fan of horses. You have the eye my friend and do these lenses proud... or perhaps its the other way around...

Actually Reagan... you never want to have to choose. You need BOTH of them... the 50 f/1.2 and 55 f/1.2 I mean...
