Those are some very nice clouds Leighton. I know you do some heavy lifting and work hard, but looking at the scene like that you are living the dream. Hats off for that.

Today I went to visit a couple, husband and wife, married for 26 years and living their dream for the past 25 years.
They were the last independent Nikon retailer in this area and di dnot make a buck off internet sales. All 100% personal. Real service. I had my cameras and lenses serviced and repaired with them, bought quite a few lenses and bodies there over the years.

Internet however, and especially the attitude of buyers coming for "hands on" Experience and then ordering through internet, bargain prices on eBay and some rudeness of customers expecting the same low prices in store as they could see on the internet finally made them decide to not deal with it any longer. The store closes as of April 30th.

Me, I consider that a real shame. I went to say fare thee well. Spent well over an hour with some chit-chat and eventually was persuaded to leave some money.

Not a manual focus lens, and not even a manual focus camera but an icon in Nikons history and my doom. Now I can really never buy another consumer level camera again because it's just not the same. Now I really need a D3

My new film machine:

I had some time to kill the other day out in the Mojave Desert due to my 10:00 o'clock rescheduling to 11:00 o'clock. I had a 24mm AI-s lens with me so I took advantage of the time and took some photos. All are jpeg's SOOC

Gregg, ^ that's one of your nicest sets so far in my opinion. Love your play with the open 24/2.8!

Buddy, that's a sad story you've told us. I'm glad the F5 did find a nice home. Happy film-shooting!

Ram, very nice portraits with your 105/2.5!

David, amazing to see that the couple is enjoying some German beer Down Under Beautiful sunset-shots!

Leighton, the clouds look like soft-filtered in their appearance ;-) Beautiful mood over your hood.

Ken and Scott - wow, your locomotives are pretty large beasts compared to the ones over here.

Georg I really love the B&W Using the 28 mm 2.0, That's a lens that interests me but to tell you the truth I really love your use of the 24 mm 2.0 Hmmmmm
Thanks for the suggestions and in theory they make a lot of sense. I just don't really like zooms much, although if I were to get one the 25-50 would really fit the bill.
...

Ray, in terms of sharpness the 28/2 is a much better lens than the 24/2, at least at wider apertures. Contrast wide open is also on a higher level, quite important for accurate focusing. I've used the 28/2 as go-to-lens for many, many newspaper-shots and never found it was lacking something (lacking was just my ability to nail focus). The 24/2 on the other side is one of my special-effects-lenses, not an everyday-lens.

Ram I love the photo of the gentleman. Great Portrait!

Leighton what a great view. You and Barbara have a beautiful home. The colors are amazing!

David your sunset photos are first rate, especially the couple. Nicely done!

Ken you are very good at what I call "walk around shots" I think she was pointing at you too

Buddy what a beautiful camera. An amazing piece of technology!!!

Gregg I agree with Georg - best to date and very nice use of the 24mm 2.8 It's a great lens for sure!

Thanks for your input Georg. I may just like the idea of having a special-effects-lens 24mm 2.0. I have the 35mm 1.4 which I enjoy using for landscapes as well as the 20mm 3.5 So it may just be the next on my list. Although the 105 1.8 looks like a charmer as well or.... the 200mm Micro? Good thing i have all year to decide

@Gregg: Thanks that helps. Read something similar on Ken Rockwell's site about the 20 f2.8 AIS. Hope the net serves us true info
PS-interesting perspectives on the aircraft and nice series..Love the shades of blue

@Ram: You will love the challenge the wides pose for creative framing. I was hunting a 16 f2.8 or f3.5 but found none around. Happy at the moment with the 20 f2.8. The crop sensor on my D7k is a limitation of course but still stiching keeps me happy till someday...
PS-Lovely sunset images and the silhoutte..Just love the bokeh on the 105 2.5..classic

@Scott: Thanks.Nice train series continued..which year is the train from?

@Ray:Thanks. Used Lunapic and the sepia tone.

@Buddy:oops..sorry..the first picture with the dog made her appear like a child. so you have aquainted her to the MF Nikkor world as shows with the 55 1.2 . Congratulations on the new aquisition and sad to hear of another victim fall prey to internet corporations.back home where I come from, this started in the late 90s when the global companies arrived with offers and discounts ensuring that every little old, reputed and reliable 'small store' eventually shut shop.Sad but true..

@Leighton:Love the shades of the morning sky.Any HDR treatment or PP?

@David:Loved your sunset images..spectacular

@Ken:Thanks.Is it with the CRC?the noise on mine is more like a rattle when u shake the helicoid
PS:Nice rails but the BW one is my favorite

Lestor, don't worry about that. She is a fairly small person and looks quite young for her age, but she is 22, and with that a bit younger then I am, but I'm still too young to have a 22 year old daughter.

She likes the 55mm because I like it that much. She really prefers AF nikkors. I'm still glad it's Nikon though.

I am falling badly for 55mm f1.2 lens., but the eBay prices are too much.. I do see Keh has the non ai for $270., Do you think it is worth that price and how to go about making it AI?

Ram that looks like a good deal. That one is the S version which does not have the coating that the SC and later versions have. You can have it converted to AI here

Amazing - away for 10 days and we have 30 new pages.

Congratulations to the Challenge participants - some really great images and for me at least an interesting discipline. I persevered to March 1 and had a lot of fun.

I'll post a couple of images with the 28 2.8 below.

Kevin, danke sehr. Your German is still doing fine. I'm Dutch though, just happen to live in Germany at the time

And yes, I agree.

@Ram, the 55mm f1,2 is a very unique lens and if it works for you it is a real joy to use. I love mine so much that I will end up buying a 2nd one sooner or later, and then send in my copy to be serviced (helicoid is running a bit dry)

That lens you show looks pretty nice. Good condition. You might be able to find a cheaper converted one if you're patient. When I bought mine a seller in California offered 3 55mm f1,2 S Auto Nikkors Ai converted (by milling the aperture ring) for $235 each. I paid AUD $ 192 for mine which is the 55mm f1,2 S.C and also Ai converted by milling down the aperture ring

There is a 16mm f2.8 ais for about 250$ on ebay. The seller reports a tiny crack on the side of the front element with surface scratches from cleaning..Reports no issue with image quality.. what sayeth everybody?

Full no questions asked return option? If not, ignore the offer. Buy a Rokinon 8mm instead for your DX body and be happy with a fisheye actually made for the DX sensor. I had one on my D7000 and only sold it when I went to FX

I recently bought two 16mm from ebay, all more expensive than this one, and both were complete garbage. cracks, scratches, fungus, you name it, they had it. All totally misrepresented by the sellers, and both sellers were camera stores. Today I received my third 16mm, this one from KEH. Ex+ is Ex+ when they rate the lens that way. It's in fantastic condition, but also cost almost $400, which for the f/3.5 is quite a deal in this condition.
