Thank you Reagan. It can be quite tricky to get the exposure right in snow, especially if the sun is out. I usually have to use exposure compensation or the snow will over expose.

Hi everyone! Hope you all are well.

I went out in my back yard on December 22nd after an ice storm, and then a snow storm. There were little jewels hanging off various plants here and there. If I breathed on them...they melted and fell off...after swinging wildly first. I had to hold my breath to shoot them, and this one was with the Nikkor 105mm ais + a 20mm tube. I think these drops were hanging by very fine spider web silk. (see far left-hand thorn).

Mostly the whole frame (minor crop)

Coolest shot I have seen in a while.

Thanks, Kevin! I've read mixed reviews about the different 500 Reflex-Nikkors. The old ones have a fixed tripod-mount and a revolving lens-mount, while the latest version has a rotating tripod-collar. I've read the old fixed tripod-mount is more sturdy than the new collar.
Don't wanna spend much money for a lens with limited use, that's why I think about getting one of the old versions.

My lens is apparently the latest, close focusing, version but it's hardly new. I got it new in 1989! It is still as new. Interestingly it comes with three rear mount filters but by unscrewing the filter mount I've been able to use the TC 14b with it also. It does make focusing a nightmare because even at 500 f8 the DOF is the equivalent of a 50mm f0.8 lens.

Thanks for the comments - appreciated.

Ken - gorgeous long boat key sunset

Andy - great pano love to see it on a sunny morning. The cicada series is super.

Georg - love the Altstadt ghosting. Also the roadside shot.

I really like the 500 - the mount is precise when used on a tripod and the only time the bokeh is full of donuts is when there are lots if highlights such as sun shining on water or through leaves.

Ray - great snowscape

Leighton - the window is awesome. I love the cat too.

Ray - love "Fishing". I didn't use a tripod with the 500 - it's a very light lens and as long as the ss is fast enough it's OK. One of the few lenses I think worth firing off a burst.

Phillippe - love the "Kodak moment"

Don - you're a past master at those dark "atmosphere" shots

Scott - beautiful barn scene

James - gorgeous macro

I have a question for you folks... My wife gave me a (surprising) suggestion regarding camera gear and I wanted your opinion.

If I were to go FF, would I be better served with a D600 or D700? I know I would have less to buy with the D600 (mainly SD cards) but on the used market, D700's are still commanding higher prices. Why is this?

If I decide against FF, I will be shopping for a D7100.

Kevin, wow, great news! In my opinion FX is the way to go for "everyday"-shooting (for sports or wildlife DX can be a good alternative). While the D700 is a well-proven camera, the D600 might be a sensible choice too (less weight, dual cardslots, larger LCD-display). Maybe you could handle both cameras (photo-club?) and pick the body with - for you - better ergonomics.

Scott, the " barn in snow" is wonderfully captured. The framing is great - the horizontal shadow-stripe is a nice "foundation". Very nice colors and exposure too.

James, the droplet on the thorn is a beautiful find and delightful shot.

Peter, thanks for sharing your insights about the Reflex-Nikkor! Right now I have my eyes on a Tamron (thanks, Kevin), if I can't get this, I will take another look at the Reflex-Nikkor. I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to tripod-mounts, the 500 Reflex is not all that big and I fear the tripod-mount could be too close to the camera when using a really large tripod-head.

Thanks for the comments on the summer-lake - much appreciated!

James, very interesting shot. Good eye on spotting the delicate droplets. Will have to keep my eye out for them.

Kevin, good news indeed. I really like the FX format and have been all FX for awhile now. I would give serious thought to the D600/610 for FX, since you have a past history of pain with heavier camera gear; every little bit helps. Of course, you can go even lighter with DX but then you are giving up FX. If you are going to continue to use mostly MF Nikkors, they will be all FX so no gain to be had between DX/FX. BEst of luck with the decision.

I am back to life, family comes home during the holidays and takes over like a storm, really good times, but no photos, I am very deliberate when taking pictures and cannot perform under duress.

Will start commenting with Sir Edward Elgar's pictures, very alive Peter! those were the times!

Jose, one feels present when looking at your fireworks, and right there with the spyder

Eric, I feel guilty that San Diego has been in the 70s all along the holidays, your pictures freeze me!

Jeff, your San Diego sunset at the beach with the 16mm is fantastic!

Samy, what a stained window! The 85mm does it justice.

Ray in Ohio, snow like sand.

Philippe, a Citroen in the dark like old times.

Steve, congrats on the 50-135

Don, the 58mm 1.2 shines

John, what would life be without your sunset panos

Beautiful sunset Ken

Andy, enticing Cairns beach pano, what's the cicada doing in winter? Love the guitar player portrait, very expressive hair

Leighton, I missed your Iced Art.

Ray in Florida, just amazing composition and color

I ended the holidays in Dana Point, 70F.
