Ronny, your flower images are always a pleasure. I for one would love a tutorial how you process your flower images and other macro work. I have some ideas, but nothing ever gets close (with the exception of my dahlia image, that's the only macro flower shot of mine I like).

Looking for any opinions. I have the 28 2.8 ais. I was wondering how the 35 2.0 Ai or ais compare? The 28 focuses a tad closer, and is very sharp. I was wondering how the 35's compare with bokeh and sharpness. Using on a DX body.
Thank you for any input.
Scott

I can tell you the first version of the 35/2.8 only gets good by f/5.6. The later versions are better, but I can't tell you about them as I haven't tried them (other than the new 35/1.8 for Dx, great lens).

I had the 35 f/2 AI-s until I finally opened my checkbook and bought the f/1.4 at that focal range. I figured the slower lens was superfluous and sold it to Alan on this thread. There was nothing about the lens not to like but as always I was fixated on speed. When I began my much later shopping spree while searching for converted pre-AI lenses I bought a 35 f/2 O Ai'd in very sweet condition for $112. I don't use that lens often but when I put together a kit of pre-AI lenses I'll take it with me. This is what the lens looks like..

This was shot with that lens…

I probably posted this before. I also posted a shot with the AI-s lens that showed off its rather pleasant bokeh. I think the lens is a nice alternative for anyone not inclined to drop big bucks on the f/1.4 AI-s. That is a great lens, as Ray keeps demonstrating, but it is also a rather serious investment. Good luck sorting it out Scott.

I found my way to the thread primarily because I'm house bound with a cold. But it is time to get to bed. Hope everyone is well.

Scott: I did the reverse
Shot with the 35/2 AI for awhile and now with the 28/2.8 AIS
I have a love-hate relationship with 35mm - I think it's the bees knees as a one lens solution, and then I start to yearn for something wider. Then the distortion makes me wonder about a normal perspective. And the cycles continues.
I got the 35/2 AI for edge-to-edge sharpness, as a companion piece to my 14-24mm. According to Bjorn, the AI and AIS are pretty decent for that.
I personally find the 28/2.8 to be sharper and its close focus ability a very welcome feature when I need it
Have had times when details get murky with the 35/2, and wouldn’t sharpen regardless
This happens especially when shot wide open

Scott, I have an old pre ai 28 2.8 which I converted myself and despite its vintage it is a superb lens. I've been able to crop significantly so to my mind the lens covers the 35mm FOV more than adequately.

Samy - the cat and bubbles is one of your best. I also like the 300mm snow shot

Leighton, Buddy, Samy, Georg, Steve, Ray - Thanks for the positive feedback. Appreciated.

Leighton - love the sugarloaf but I could only see it via Flickr. Oh stay bored - great icicles!

Chin - looks scrumptious.

Steve - great Xmas series

Ray - I like the plumbago flower (it's also a South African native plant that grows wild all over the Eastern Cape province) - interesting use of the 20mm

Ronny - stunning flowers

Curtis - get well soon

Scott, something you may consider is the 28-50mm f3.5 AI-s. I had this lens when I shot DX and it was very useful. The color and contrast output matched my beloved 50-135 so of course I liked that. The ONLY thing I didn't like about it was that it didn't focus close enough on the wide end. It has a not-very-good macro feature built in , but you use it on the 50 end.

Good luck with your search!

WOW Andy - those flowers are up there with Ronny's

Curtis - that pano is one of my favourite city views .... It always excites me thinking that one day I might get to visit there again . Hopefully sooner rather than later !!

Ronny - those flowers are absolutely stunning .... again .... you depress me

Ray - I love the effect you are achieving on that 20mm .... it's simply wonderful !!

Samy I love your berries in the snow .... great contrast and detail .... To my shame I am still preferring the Nikon lenses over the Leica .... even though I am paid to say and know the opposite ...

Thanx for all your comments guys

Steve

Just got a couple from today in the garden

The Magnolia bud .... it's not even very cold yet and the winter will bite soon for us .... but it buds anyway !!
ISO1600 2 x PK-13 on 85mm f1.4

The Mahonia Japonica buds are on a single PK-13 with 85mm f1.4 at ISO400

We have no real flowers at the moment, so will have to wait for spring to try an emulate Ronny and Andy. Hey ho ....

Steve
